Filling up gas, stops like it's full when it really isn't...

I made a topic about this a while back and it's still pissing me off to no end...

This happens at different pumps at different stations so it's not the pump or gas station, but when I use a credit card, or over pay the station to make sure I'll get a full tank [go back in for remaining cash], the pump stops as if the tank were full but according to the gas level, I'm a little over 2/3 full, or sometimes I force it to abuot 3/4 full...

But argh, anyone find a way to fix this?

;_;

Isn't this a charcoal canister issue?

could be something restricting your vapor evac tube that runs out side the file up tube. try holding the pump so that its not covering up that little hole around your gas cap. and the charcoal canister stores and converts the gas vapor to non harmful vapors. another good place to check...

i figured it would be the needle float.Next time you fill up watch how many gallons you put in to see if the tank is full or not, if its full and the gauge says diff i would bet on the float.Easy to change.

How easy to change?

Can I do it myself, or should I have Nissan do it?

So, if it's around in reality full, around 15 gallons, and it's only 3/4 full, so the needle looks wrong, it's the float?

But what if it's really just not filling up all the way?

I highly dought it is the float. if you do a search you will see that this is a very very common problem, i beleive only on the 1st gens though. I had this same problem and it turned out to be the charcole canister which i replaced. Also there is a TSB on this issue so if you call the dealership and ask to get a copy of it it may help.

What's a TSB?

And how hard is it to change the charcole canister?

Thanks!

I don't know exactly where it is on an Alti but it may be somewhere under the back seat cushion under that black metal cover. Basically you would have to get a digital multimeter and check to see if the voltage to and from the sending unit are within spec. But I have no idea what the Nissan spec range is for that. You may need to go to a shop or the dealer.

when you dont push the nozzle in far enough, some pumps have a safety mechanism that will stop the pumping of the gas. next time you fill up, push the nozzle harder and if that doesnt work then its probably something wrong with your car.
