Exclamation Random Rev limiter at Random RPM's??

Ok, I posted something about this before but not many people answered me despite my many bumps. So hopefully my "shorter" version of the problem will help. As soon as i start to drive fast and rev up the engine for about ten minutes or so, i'll start getting this random rev limiter. I will accelerate and at a random RPM (anywhere from 2,000 RPM's to 6,000 RPMs) the engine will just cut out on me while i'm accelerating. It cuts out EXACTLY like when you hit the rev limiter, the rev's bounce off the rpm like that was the rev limiter. My car is a 1996 GXE 5 spd with only a cat back OBX and a K&N air filter for engine performance. Any Idea's?? The dealer doesn't know what it is and neither does the shop i go to when i can't do something myself. Please help because I have no idea whats going on!

I actually forgot to mention something. The engine has never thrown a code. The dealer and the shop i was talking about have both checked for codes. And when you slow down after the "spirited" driving, a little while later you can start to beat on it again without any problems. The engine isn't overheating either, in case anyone was wondering.

by the way, how exactly would i check if it was a bad ecu? The dealer can't really help me because i've driven with their technicians and i can't get it to do the problem (of course, because it won't do the problem when there is a mechanic in the car!)

with no codes the only thing I can think of is a bad gear switch , on the 5spds they have 2 switches on the trans , one for reverse lights and one for 5th gear, which is to tell the ECU when your in 5th so it can set in the speed limiter .... if it thinks its in 5th all the time or irraticly thinks it is in 5th , it may cause a premature rev limiter .... my brothers old 240SX did that , it would revlimit at 5000 RPM all the time , I found the 5th gear switch had shorted , I just unplugged it .... Cant think of anything else that wouldnt set a code .... speedometer woorking correctly ???

am I missing something here?

You have a 5 speed and the engine would cut off as if you hit a rev limited at random RPMs? The tranny works fine and everything else is fine right?

Then its whatever governs the rev limiter is whats wrong. I won't throw any codes because it thinks its operating exactly how its supposed to. A switch may be bad as well the system that governs the limiter, since according to whats said above its all random.

I know it sounds like I'm repeating whats said here but I'm really not, or at least not on purpose.

Well I know the speedo and tach are working correctly. As far as the switches that control the rev limiter that sythara is talking about, any way i can check those myself? What about that 5th gear switch that SHAWN is talking about? Any way I can check that out (or unplug it) myself? Also I got some other ideas what it could be. Is there anything that might change as the engine gets warmer than during normal driving that might be faulty (a sensor or something)? Plus, to be a little more descriptive, it isn't EXACTLY like a rev limiter, the engine kindof cuts out, it still bounces off the RPM's like a rev limiter, but the engine seems to loose speed too. Thanks for your help guys.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Whats the mileage on your car? Ever change the fuel filter or pump?

1999 Firebird Formula Trans Am WS.9, M6, Blue-Green Chameleon
1987 GMC Jimmy, TBI350/TH350, 10b, 6" lift, 35" tires.
Neither quite stock.

I got 102,000 miles, but you make a good point, I bought the car with about 85,000 miles, I don't know if the fuel filter or fuel pump have ever been replaced. I can do the filter and pump myself, I'll try that.

Give it a try. Not really sure what it would be unless it does have something to do with what SHAWN said.

when you try and go thru fixing or replacing, make sure you go theu the easier things 1st, such as the fuel filter (which should be replaced every 100k miles) and so on.

Ok well I can easily replace the fuel filter thats no problem. Is there any way to check if my fuel pump is not performing 100%? If i could check this i could possibly avoid an unneccisary repair. I keep leaning away from electrical because of no code, but if the fuel filter doesn't fix it then I'll have to look into it
