Question What have you paid for timing chain/water pump complete job?

Hey all,

My sisters '97 has 74K on the clock and is in need of the timing chain and water pump change. Shop manuals are putting this job at 15hours for labor plus parts.

With a "discount" we have a very reputable shop quoting us $1,000 just on labor. That's a heavy nut!!

What have you paid to do this job??

Why does she need her timing chain replaced at 74,000? Is it because a shop is telling her she needs to? If that is the case, go find another shop. The timing chain is intended to last the life of the car. I can count on one hand how many people I know from this site who have snapped/broken their timing chain and needed to replace it.

The chain guide is making noise...you can hear it from the outside of the car. It started making noise at around 67K and it's been getting worse. It's only a matter of time, and if the engine has to be opened to replace the guide, might as well do the chain while there.

id say you have a problem with the tensioner then and not the chain. irregular oil changes create problems with the tensioner. your chain is NOT going to break anytime soon. theyre not that weak. get the tensioner looked at and change the water pump yourself. its a 1 hour job - tops.
