A/C Screech

Hello,

I have a 2000 Altima GXE. I recently have taken it in for maintenance and such. All the fluid levels, etc are fine.

My question is this: When on the highway at over maybe 2300rpm, if the A/C is on, the car will at random intervals make a short squeak/screech noise. This is always accompanied by a slightly noticeable loss of power. It usually lasts for less than 1 second. Everything works fine, and the A/C is still cold as ever for the whole trip. I've driven the car for around 3 hours straight on the highway and there are no issues apart from this slight squeak.

From what I've read by using the search function, it seems like the problem is with slack on the alternator belt and that tightening it will be the solution.

If anyone has any ideas or opinions please let me know

My father inlaw was having the same problem with his 94 Nissan. A friend of mine who is a long time(22yr) Nissan mechanic told him to tighten up the belt. He did and problem was solved.

i have a 96 altima, sometimes when i rev go high rpm's the screech stays for about 2 or 3 seconds, i got it checked and the guy said it might be the compressor, he wasnt much of a professional though, he worked at lesSchwab's tires

I just had my belts changed and actually get that screeching sound all the time now, it happens for the first few seconds when i start(with a/c on) and usually at times when the torque is a little higher. I had it looked at by a friend who is a mechanic, and he said its the a/c compressor. Just a word of advice, new a/c compressors run around 335, you can get used ones, just be careful b/c the can have gunk in them and blow it into your a/c system

How does one tighten the A/C belt? I've managed to tighten the alternator belt and it seemed to make it a little better but the chirp is still there.

Seems like theres 1 adjustment you do from the top side and 1 from the bottom side? Sorry I cant be more specific...

Underneath the car, remove the splash guard 2 10mm bolts, and the adjuster is right there 14mm wrench loosen the nut on the adjustment pully, turn the bolt counter clock wise to tighten the belt.

When your doing this its probably a good time to check the belt,

AC screech and chirps are mainly due to a loose AC belt, ie. the AC pulley needs adjustment, like steve68 said.

I see I see. Thanks for the advice guys. Since I don't have a lift, it probably means I should take it in to the dealership then to get it done. It doesn't seem like its too complicated so hopefully it won't be expensive.

mine has done that in the past but only when the A/C comp. or fans would turn on and run thru its cycle. Just a small chirp and slight hesitation in power. could be a belt or you comp. going bad. If its not the belt I would just live with it.

Honestly I never investigated the issue cause I hardly run A/C due2the power and gas it uses up. My chirp went away on its own but, when I feel the A/C run thru a cycle or say the fans kick on while im at a consistant speed, that is when I feel a slight hesitation in power. It could just be a load issue that the belt is taking on so check that first.
