98 Altima (Service Engine Soon Light)

Hey Everyone,

I was hoping someone could answer a few questions I have about my 98 Altima.

1) The Service Engine soon light came on and I believe it is my Evaporational Valve. Is it a big deal that I continue to drive with a possible leak in this emissions system.

2) For the first time ever I finished driving my car and when I turned it off (keys out of the ignition and everything) it sounded like my engine was still on (although i think it was just my fan). Does anyone know why this might have happened?

It is normal for the fans to run after the car is shut down.My old 99 Altima did that from day one brand new from the dealer.It tells you in the owners manual that it is normal.

Not sure about the EVAP,run a search as I know I have seen many threads on it...

Like HondaKillah said, the fan operation is normal. As far as an Evap leak and driving around. It won't hurt anything. Thats just for emission standards. You will want to fix it before you go to get an emissions test. All the evap system does is route gas fumes back into the fuel system so they don't vent to the atmosphere.

no, the EGR system routes exhaust gas back into the intake lowering the combustion temperature with ultimately results in a decrease of NOx emissions.

the evap system does more or less what Atimadator said. fuel vapors are captured in the charcoal canister and eventually get sent back into the intake and into the combustion chamber

didn't know the 2.4 Altima had a system, I know my Maxima has it,
