Broken Coil Spring Replace?? or Not

I recently took my car to mechanic for starting problems and they told me I had a broken coil spring. I am pretty sure it broke recently when my car took a 180 turn when I hit a pile of snow when exiting from freeway. Luckily car didnt hit anything and no one was injured.
Now my question is should I replace it or not. The mechanic wants to charge $700 to replace both, install and align. I really dont want to spend that much.
Can I just drive without replacing. Mechanic was telling it might get into way of my tire and burst it. I am not sure how.

ANY Advice??

Can I just find a salavge spring and just get one replaced??

p.s. I have 2001 Altima with Almost 135K

replacing springs is pretty easy with the right tools. I actually have a set of OEM springs in good condition if you want to pick some up on the real cheap.

If your coil is actually broken that is something that needs immediate attention. If a coil is broken though, you should be riding lower on that corner. I would use some jack stands and get the car in the air yourself and take of the wheels and check out the suspension yourself to see exactly how the spring is broken.

If you're going to fix it yourself its really not hard to change struts and springs. The only specialty tool you'll need is a spring compressor but you could probably rent one somewhere for a day. I happen to own an old school style one.

I would be more than happy to buy from you. I dont think I can do it myself as it is extreme cold out here and I am really busy too. How much should it cost a mechanic to do it. They told me 2hr per side. If I can find some one who can just replace the coil spring on one side for cheap I will probably do that. I would prefer buying from you because if I go aftermarket then I have to replace both sides to match it. With OEM I will just get one side down.

I am able to find a salvage strut assy with spring on ebay. Do you guys think it is better to install these? Also I am confused. I tried to look above the tire and I did see the broken spring. However the spring is compressed still. It seems like it just broke off at the very bottom part it sits on the plate. Will try to post pictures later?

eBay Motors: 2001 Nissan Altima Front Right Strut (item 350121643225 end time Feb-04-09 10:56:20 PST)

Will be much cheaper on labor to install this. these are $50 shipped. I am trying to see if I can get a matching pair from same car

it is very easy to just install a strut with a spring already on it. It's only 5 bolts besides the lug nuts.

If you don't want to replace them yourself, go search around for a better price. I was once quoted $200 to do a four-corner spring and strut install (though I had already bought the springs and struts). $700 seems a bit high; it shouldn't take more than an hour with proper tools, minus alignment and cost of a spring.

Thanks for all the help. I bought a matching pair of strut assemblies from ebay for $115 shipped. Came from a car with 62K miles. I got them installed for $70 bucks from a local guy.
I have the struts from my car. Front Right strut assmbly is good if someone looking for only one side I can give it for really cheap.

^i think he's asking you if the struts that you removed and are now not using have good condition strut mounts that he could buy off you.

the price for pair of springs is about 100$ including delivery
you should change both, because there may be different suspension coeficient between new and old springs, that can cause many problems during the drive

700$ this is stupid, it should be much more less
