black smoke out of exhaust pipe

It was - 30c or -40c , the car didnt want to start , after numerous attempts , it still wasnt going , I checked everything even connected my battery to another running car. After trying for another 5-10 minutes it started , making all kind of noises , but from exhaust black smoke came out and some stinky smell, about 5 second after it started working normally. Any ideas what could it be and how bad it is ?

that's cold. -40C is also -40 F.
In my ignorance, these are my thoughts:
1) see if it reproduces the difficulties with the appropriately thin winter oil in it. I'm not there, but I doubt 5w-30 is the proper grade (too thick).
2) I'd be sure and add an engine block heater, or an oil pan heater. The latter is available in a magnetized version that just clamps on...

luck

The black smoke is a normal response to a very hard starting engine. It'll eventually clear up. Just keep notice if you continue to get recurring hard starts during very cold weather again.

the engine turned over but the fuel wasnt igniting so you had some unburned fuel puddled in your intake and thats what caused the black smoke upon startup.its normal.

If NISMO means NISsan MOtorsport, whats HOnda MOtorsport?

-40C, ouch. I guess it's time for me to quit complaining about the 30F temps here during the day!

Black smoke from a gasoline engine = flooded (too much gas in the intake), or running extremely rich.

Blue can mean several things, none of them good. You don't want blue smoke.

It still shouldn't be flooding, but -40 is a bit colder than pretty much any car is designed to handle. Get a block heater and battery blanket for it.

As everyone else said, the black smoke was probably normal because of the hard start, and those kind of temperatures are very harsh on the engine trying to start.

What exactly did it do when it was hard to start? Did it just keep cranking and cranking and not start, or did it just crank very slowly?
