So I bought a car. 2001 Nissan Altima, for $500
The body is a B+
The interior is an A+
Currently the engine is a D-
I bought it knowing that it has the Death Rattle (Timing Chain Tensioner).
I also believe it has a failing oil pump (oil pressure light is on meaning only 1-2 psi pressure).
The gentleman that sold it to me said he had just paid to have the car cleaned and detailed, and an oil change to get it ready for sale, and that on the way home the oil light came on and here started hearing a rattle he shut it down immediately and had it towed home. I bought it expecting to hear rod knocking or bearing noise. Surprisingly quiet except for the upper chain rattle. Anyways I was shocked the car started on the first twist of the key, I assumed the timing chain let go and the pistons slapped the valves and the engine was basically toast.
Here she is
I towed it home, its a surprisingly heavy car (the Expedition didn't like it). So it has been run long enough to drive onto my trailer and off of my trailer into my shop. The thing that scares me is that I am sure someone has added Lucas oil to the oil when it was changed. The oil was as thick as honey when I drained it so I am wondering what it is hiding.
I guess I am at the point now where I am just pondering, am I in it for a full engine replacement?
Should I do the chain and pump on the car?
Should I go ahead an pull the engine and do it all off the car?
At the moment I am leaning towards pulling the engine I have started disassembling things, and have found oil caked all over the timing cover, and behind the AC Compressor. (I am assuming a blown front seal at one point (My 1997 200sx would blow the front seal everytime an oil change place put 4 quarts in it).
I am thinking that pulling the engine and on the stand I will have a much easier time inspecting the bearings, and looking at the rod and crank to check for scoring (without disassembling the motor not talking machine shop inspection just better than I could do leaving it in the car).
(I already own the tools needed to pull the engine 30x80 shop 60 gallon compressor, and small hoist).
So is it more labor to go ahead and pull the engine and tranny together?
Is it worth it just pulling them or should I do it all in the car?
If I do need to replace the engine I am already half way there at least.
I have already ordered New Timing Kit, New Oil Pump, and new water pump. If I pull the engine I am going to go ahead and do a new intake manifold gasket as well.
