hid problems

i was installing my hid's to my altima and for some reason one of the hid's kept burning my fuse. after i checked the problem and replaced the fuse i found out that the hid itself burned out. does anyone know why this might of happened?

keep in mind if you have standard altima with no hid feature the electrical system is built different. while some may not have problems, others might like yourself. if it keeps blowing fuse it can either be your car electrical system not resisting the load of the ballast at start-up or chances are you are installing aftermarket hid ballast which can be bad and harm your electrical system. try installing the hid kit you have but using a relay. basically dont install hid kit direct to your car. use a relay in which you install hid kit to relay and relay direct to your car. the relay serves as protection to your hid kit and electrical system. relays comes with fuses to control load of hid ballast draw. i installed mine on my altima with relay and no problems. by the relay being there i feel more protected. relay should cost you about $35-$40

thanks for the tip man! aside from the problem i been having. im pretty sure that this question has probably been answered numerous times ,but what is the best brand that can be referred to use that is a good product and situations like this don't occur even if i have the relay installed?

There are a million topics on this...I searched and read just about all of them that I could find. I ended up purchasing an Apexcone kit from DDM tuning. It is supposed to be a good kit, and comes with a relay wiring harness, and lifetime warranty standard with the kit. Delivered to me for $150.00. I don't have it yet, should be here sometime this week.

theres many competitive aftermarket kits that are good. when hid came out it was expensive and few aftermarket kits where available. the few that where available where bad. nowadays theres many good out there. i sometimes read people buying kits because they are plug and play and buy it. but forget to actually consider the quality of the kit. what good is a plug and play kit if quality is horrible. remember you are investing your hard earned money and therefore should expect to get something good. i used to sell many hids kits on ebay about 2 years ago in which i bought in latvia, taiwan, japan. i made many good sales and didnt receive much complaints. i stopped since suppliers went under and i wasnt able to find a decent trustworthy supplier to buy from. honestly if you can invest more money be safe and get OEM equipment. OEM hella/valeo ballast are the best...if you look around on ebay and online you will find them for good price. since they are made in german quality is superior since thats what high end luxury cars use. becareful with suppliers trying to sell OEM equipment with fake stickers on them. now for bulbs....honestly go with 4300k-5000k bulbs. these are better made and output is close or true to OEM. best brand is philips or osram...all german made. our cars use H11...you can get philips or osram rebased to h11 (d2s) thats what i use in my car and have used in all my cars. also when installing hid's make sure the ceramic tube is facing downward on both sides. the science behind this is that the both bulbs will burn equally during the colorshift. and will help the beam pattern.

I didn't want to make another H.I.D topic, so i thought i would ask here. I'm in a bit of a pickle. I use to have a 2.5 and on that i had the Kaixen hid kit. Well, to make the story short i traded it in for a 3.5SL and never really took the kit off. I installed the Mccullouh 6500K about 3 months ago and i noticed that it wasn't bright and for some reason the light didn't shine as far as my kaixen.

2 weeks ago i purchased the same kaixen kit that i had on my car. And after installing it i noticed the same thing. I mean it was slightly brighter, but it wouldn't shine as far as it did before, i even tried raising the lights up, but that didn't help at all. Last night my buddy looked it and he think it might be the little chrome case above the bulb. I circled it in the picture so you can see. Could that be it?? I highly doubt it, besides my 2.5 use to be really bright and it could be seen 1/2 mile away. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? I'm pretty sure it's not the ballast, because both of the kits were brand spankin new.

again sorry for stealing your thread, but i just didn't want to make another hid thread.

I doubt it has anything to do with the headlight housing, the halogen reflectors onthe 2.5 and 3.5 are identical. Was the Kaixen kit the same color temperature? If it was 4300K or 5000K and you went to the 6500K bulbs then you should see a decrease in light output.

Need to know if all three kits you are talking about used the same bulbs to really give you a good answer, but I would not be looking at the reflector design as the reason.

how did u actually try to move the headlights up? can we actually manually move the beam up or down on this altima? in my 2000 accord you adjust the beam up or down without having to take off the housing. it had a screw in which you rotate left or right. i wish our altimas had this since we would be able to lower the beam once we install the hids.

the 3.5SL comes stock with Xenon 4300K HIDs. they have a different headlight housing than the halogen housings (like on the 2.5's have), so that the beam is aimed more toward the ground and to not produce as much glare, so you dont blind oncoming drivers.

the simple answer....the 3.5SL that you have now has different housings than the 2.5 you previously had.....they may look exactly the same, but the reflectors on the inside are different.

id be happy to trade you my 2.5 housings for your 3.5 housings

Actually, we do have that as well. It's a light green screw that's hidden pretty well. It's shown on the service manuals that the technicians use. I dled a copy from this board, but don't know where the link is now.

Anyways, if you open your trunk and look straight down a little bit above the headlight housing, you should be able to spot it. Good luck.

Something's not making sense then. It sounds like Startxp05 bought a car with stock HID's (3.5SL) and then installed a kit? I guess I mis-spoke earlier, didn't see that he had an 3.5SL.
