changed brake lights to LED? = (

so i was thinking about changing my tail lights to LED's...sounds good...theyre brighter, right? well...supposedly...so tuesday i decide to go for it. im at work, its dark...cool, here goes. i take out the tail light and put in a red LED...have my buddy step on the brakes. the factory 3157LL is brighter. so i say to myself, 'okay...lets go with a white....the red casing will be brighter anyways' so i go inside and grab the white, and i put the white in...buddy steps on the brakes...still doesnt look brighter. i step on the brakes for him...he sees the same thing. so we decided to leave one white in until it got pitch black at midnight. i drive home with 1 led and 1 OEM.

i shower, so on and so forth, and i go to another buddys house about midnight (for wiring his 56 ford pickup from scratch...fun! = D). i didnt mention one was LED and one was OEM...so i have him look and he points out that the OEM is brighter. what a pain in the ass.

has anyone else tried this or had this experience? if you havnt already tried it, i wouldnt waste the money on the bulbs, i get them cheap at my shop so i can take the risk without concern. i just wanted to see if anyone else had this? my LEDs are extremely bright in every car except mine. talk about disappointing. if you guys want, ill switch it again and get some pictures.

yeah i have the LEDs in my interior...every light except my glove box light is changed. i was just disappointed. my leds are the brightest you can get...its like a cylinder, 5 lights in the end, and probably 30 around the circumference. ill take a picture of those too.

First off what LED's did you use?

Second off, mine appear brighter in the housing, but they cast off light further and more evenly than the regular bulbs do, if you can believe it.

I used similar ones the first time around... they suck. They're good for doors and glove boxes, maybe even license plate bulbs, but they're terrible for brake lights. They're okay as tails, but since we have a dual-circuit setup back there, it's a bad idea.

Unfortunately, you do have to go a little more expensive to get quality light output.

to go with the higher quality, will it beat the OEM or just match it?
ive put those GP thunders in other cars and they work mazing. its probably the dual circuit that makes a difference

That's the problem I had. The tails were great, and looked really nice, but the brake light dual circuit was BARELY brighter than the tail light.

Mine were doing great as brake lights (unfortunately one needs replacement) and threw the light quite a bit further backwards.

I use similar tails to TheRupp and mine are brighter with the brake lights on, and just a little less bright without them, but that's ok...I have them in for the quicker "on" time for cars to be able to respond to me braking, plus they match the 3rd brake light in the time they come on now...

Here's a picture with mine on
