Actually if you know how engine valve rattle sounds like, then you can always say for sure this is valve rattling or something else.
For example; If you fill your car with gasoline rate less than 87 and then try to accelerate very fast you will hear exactly that valve rattle.
So, may be indeed you had problem with heat shield. But I don’t believe this is a heat shield, because if it is, then you will hear it during driving, when engine idle, etc….
Its looks like as usual they don’t want to tell you, what actually was the problem.
nissan service..... :-(

Does this bulletin only apply for California-spec 2.5 engines?
I have a non-Cali engine, and having the same issue. Should I show my service dept this bulletin and have them fix it for me?

This bulletin applicable to engine with specific ECM firmware, and I think all engine which Nissan build is Cali-spec, may be I'm wrong...
I think this is a good idea to print this bulletin and show it to them.
I did it and they fix this problem.

OK so i just got a call from the dealership, they said they fixed the problem and its ready to go....they updated to systems...they said that it was really bad in my car (DUH!) and it shud be good to go, but it might make a slight noise because of the "chain belt" he is so conviced about....My suggestion is to definitely take this forum with u guys....ill let you know when i get into my car how it sounds!

How can you tell if your car has a 2.5 destined for California. I have the cold start rattle and it is driving me nuts. Called the dealer and they said it does not apply to me because I bought the car outside of California. Is there a sticker or VIN code detail that can show me if I have one or not??

Please help,
TOM B

First thing to do is take a look at the sticker it will say cal emissions. I believe it also would say that under the hood. However, someone here said that all the cars come with the ca emissions so have them check the car with the consult unit. If it isn't the problem, then there is a bigger problem which they need to fix. I think there is a way of decoding the vin number to see if you have it but if not, call nissan customer service and ask them to clarify if it is for your car

Sorry to bring this topic from the dead. This happen to me sometime when I start up my car, I will hear a rattling sound for 1-2 second before the engine start up. Is it the same problem that as everyone is having or this is something different?

It could also be the cam chain tensioner rattling before it gets oil on start-up. The VQs are noted for this, as are the QRs. That's why I use German Castrol Syntec 0w30. The oil flows instantly when cold and provides the 30 weight protection when at operating temp. Actually the GC is a tad toward the high side of 30 weight when hot. My cam tensioner now does not rattle on start-up. It did slightly before when I was using the recommended 5w30 or 10w30 petro-based oil. If you want to know everything there is to know about oil for the Altimas, go to the 02-06 discussion and read the threads by il_signore97 and Bob is the oil guy. They're very well informed, and can give you info on anything oil and filter related.

2.5 SL over here & I've got a problem...

So I brought my car to the Nissan's Service Station this past Monday (Bay Ridge Nissan) to get this rattling bs problem checked out/fixed. The guys there said it was the first time they've seen the Nissan Bulletin acknowledging this prob and how to fix it (I brought them a copy of it). I ended up staying at the dealership for close to 5 hrs, thinking the problem had been resolved.

Well, it's been a few days and the problem still persists... and worse yet, yesterday, my car was parked in the shade, I drove the car for about 20-30 mins back from the beach and when I got home and turned the engine off... I noticed there was a strange noise coming from under the hood (like the engine was still engaged)... when I popped it open, I saw that the engine coolant was boiling and kind of spraying out of the cover cap. Now the "Service Engine Soon" light is on.

Any ideas of what may have happened? Could the ECM code have been programmed incorrectly... Engine overheating, etc.?

I am going back to the effin Dealership on saturday, to hopefully get this resolved.
