I will apologize ahead of time if i'm asking a stupid question, but i need to know if the wheel moves closer to the edge of the fender does the offset goes up or down? and does anyone know what would the offset be if i want the wheel and tire to line up as close to the fender as posible.
I am aware that changine the size of the wheel plays alot with your handling, i own an SE and love my handling, i would like to give up as little if any of it, but i love the way a wheel looks when it sits right along side of the fender, not sticking out and not tucked all the way in, can someone please explain to me by going to a 19 or 20" wheel how much of a change will i notice, and then from the factory required offset moving the wheel out towards the fender would that be loosing even more handling and comfort or going with a big wheel alone would be the biggest notice.
Also if anyone knows if 245/40/20 will fit on there or do i have to drop to a 19", will i notice a huge difference between a 35 and a 40?

If you will look at this very web site, you will find a section all about tires and wheels. And it has a discussion of offset, WITH PICTURES!!! It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different wheels.
If you go to Tire Rack (one of the sponsors of this web site) or to Discount Tire, they will show you what tires/wheels will fit your car. They start with the stock size, and then go through upgrades- +1, +2, etc.
There are people who go to 20s on the Altimas- but that requires a VERY low profile tire, which doesn't offer much protection against curbs and potholes. The Infiniti G37, even with the sport package, only goes to 19s, so that might tell you something. And that car uses a slightly large diameter tire, so there is a little more sidewall than you would have on an Altima.
Does anyone have any input on my situation, sorry to the guys above but you did not answer my question, you just stated a couple obvious things and pointed me to a website which give me a few diff wheels and all have diff offsets, which brings me to my ORIGINAL question, some of the wheels that they offer say it has a 38mm offset and some state that it has a 42mm offset, both recomended for my car, now i just need to know the diff in the look of those offsets, then i would also like to know what those diff offsets do the the ride of my vihicle, thanks for your input i do appreciate everyones help, its just that that didn't help any.

I pointed you to another part of THIS website, because you ASKED for the definition of offset. Are you wasting our time by asking for things you don't really want to know?

ok
No need to get upset just cause you didn't know the answer.
Get over youself, no one asks you to post a comment to any specific topics, especially when you don't know the answer.
And thanks for telling me that +1 and +2 is how i get my 17" wheel bigger.
I know the answer- YOU are the one who is asking questions. I'm sorry that I can't give the answer in a simple enough form for you to understand. The suggestions I made would get you to information that most people would have been able to digest, that would explain the term "offset", and would allow those people to envision the "look" of that offset.

you cannot have the fender and the wheel aliened , you need them to be tuck in, let the suspension do it work.
2nd 245/40/20" is a massive tire size. over an inch taller ,.. speedo will read too fast. 245/35/20 is the correct tire size.
3rd Offset .. Stock being +45mm, the lower the number the farther it goes out from the car. NO , pushing the wheels/tire out does not lose handling, you gain it with wider tire and a lower offset.

Right There!!! Your Da Man!!! A nice clear answer!!!
Thank you soo much for that.
Could you speak on the fact about the 245/40 beeing too big please, i checked out a couple sites and it seems like the hight of the tire isn't an issue anywhere, below i will post a link to an example of what i'm talking about, if you still think its too big then please let me know what you think of the 255/40/19
245/35/20 stands 26.8, is it ok if it goes up to 27.0? an extra .2, i can get a little wider tire and a little taller to close in the gap a little bit more, but only if i won't feel a diff between my tire being 26.8 or 27.0 . . . . . . . .thanks alot on your imput you've been alot of help.
