My wife is getting 29.5 MPG right now, and thats driving back and forth to her job approximately 20 miles away on a 55 mph road with one stop and one turn. I do not know how fast she drives on this road, however.
I can get better mpg's by not going over 2000 RPM while accelerating unless absolutely necessary. However, I cannot get her to do that.
I have owned a 07 and an 08 sentra CVT. both were averaging about 30.5 MPG on the trip computer. However, I make a point when accelerating that the tach never goes above about 2100 RPM's and keep my foot off the accelerator and "coast" when coming up on intersections when I know i am going to stop or have to yield. I know this sounds like work to remember all this while driving down the road but once you start doing it, it becomes pretty much part of driving and I don't even realize i do it anymore. And it affords me great MPG!!
Just snagged myself an '07 Sentra a couple weeks ago. I was shocked when I saw the MPG reading at 21.3mpg!! I started checking around and your post inspired me to drive like a granny and I'm watching that number rocket up. My initial driving involved fun like powering up over 6000 rpms onto highways. You have to test out the abilities of your new car and it's far past the breaking in point.
Excessive driving is SOOO tempting!
I'm not expecting the best gas mileage because my driving situation is horrible for that. Work is a whopping five minutes away and involves plenty of staring at red lights.
I'm coming from a 13mpg 94 GMC Jimmy, and was pumping in 17 gallons each time I went to the pump. Even the 21.3 I was getting before is a like a dream.
I'll keep watching my mpg, but with my driving it'll take me months to use enough to get a good idea what it's like.
I get 26 to 28 local and 31-34 mpg on interstate over 3700 miles. I learned that I improve mpg about 2 mpg by doing my own shifting rather than letting the 'computer' do it.
First 600 miles so far on the car and I'm getting 19-22 mpg with mostly city driving and a small bit of freeway driving. Whoever put 29/36 mpg rated is a damn liar. I still would have bought the car because it's great but the mileage on the dealer sticker is just flat false advertising.
yes..i think they ar liar too, i got 600 something mile on my new 08 sentra 2.0S too, and i got 19 mpg
08 Spec V Mileage, just passed 5000 miles. Mobile 1-5/30 oil, really watch tire pressure, completely stock, premium fuel. Enthusiastic but not aggressive drive. Around 75% So Cal Freeway driving.
Real tank averages, all calculated, 26mpg.
All freeway not rush hour average 30mpg
I average about 28 mpg an even mix of city and highway driving. With the traffic in NYC, it's hard to go beyond 65 mph on highways anyway. But when given the opportunity, I'll drive around 80 mph .
I am in the market for a commuter car. I wasn't really looking at the Sentra until I went to a dealer looking for an Altima Hybrid and happened to drive a Sentra CVT. I really liked the features, like bluetooth, intelligent key, etc. Fuel economy is very important. The user rating on fueleconomy.gov only average out to 25.1 MPG. If that's what people are getting I'm going to have to go with my other option, the Civic Hybrid. If it gets 35 or so, I'm in! 25 is significantly below the EPA ratings. So what are you getting?
25 to 28 in suburbia with SE-R and 31 to 34 on interstate. I shift myself in M, not in D. Which helps.
For a commuter car I would recommend the Versa SL with CVT in traffic or manual for mostly interstate as it too gets same mileage and costs less and has excellent back seat room.
I've got an '08 2.0S with CVT and 15k on the odometer. According to my console I'm getting 29mpg with an average speed of 30mph so mixed driving but not alot of stop and go. It does seem that having the AC on drops the mileage noticably.
I'm happy with the mileage, it's about on par with the sticker and what I expected...
the best i've gotten was 34 mpg - driving 57 miles (distance) one way total, using chevron premium fuel (lucas octane booster added), AC/Heater/Defroster turned OFF, windows up, with an OEM air filter replaced 2 days prior but not driven much, at 4:00 am on the highway.
i got about 26 mpg on the way back in traffic. no ac/etc turn on, windows still up, frequent coasting.
wow...in my 08 altima carrying my audio and stuff (about 200 extra lbs), if i drive highway strictly, i get about 33.5 according to computer, about 31-32 actual calculation. driving 50/50, i get about 28.5 computer, but really, 26.5-27. how you guys, with smaller motors and lighter cars cannot achieve this with decent driving, i dont know. i do drive to save gas though, so ive been driving kinda bitch lately and coasting to lights, but my conservative driving mileage should match your regular driving.
im not saying im driving slow, im just saying i avoid speeding. when i was driving 80 on freeway and not coasting to lights, i would get about 23.1 true calculations...
for the new guys, your motor needs to be broken in...do not drive conservatively. dont redline it, but you are not supposed to keep your motor at one constant RPM for long for the first 4k especially.

Highest average to date is 21 mpg, with a 60% straight highway speeds under 70mph. This is up from 6 months ago when I was getting 19. But nissan said there is nothing wrong, it is an Estimated MPG and your mileage may vary.
I can not wait for someone to steal it my nissan, hit it, or a meteor to smash it. Leaving Honda was the biggest mistake ever. Nissan is positively the worst ownership and dealership experience I have ever had. this car has already cost me round $2000 in non-warranty covered items that have stopped functioning or needed repair. I didn't put more than that in my 1999 Honda civic with 272000 miles on it....
^^ to each their own. i absolutely love everything about my nissan. great mileage (28mpg 50/50 loaded up). everything functions perfect, except a few small creeks here and there from my clutch pedal (easy fix). never had any problems with it.
wow what the heck only 19 mpg? im not an easy driver in my 2.5 altima and i still manage at least 25 mpg. something is wrong.. 19 is terrible in a 2.0 sentra, you should be getting much more even if you are on it some of the time. maybe nissan just doesnt know.. personally id check my injectors and fuel pump pressure.. compression.. i cant believe you only getting 19 or 20
