If I were to replace the transmission it would definitely not be a 5spd. I'd go with a 6SPD HLSD transmission and with that the price would go up. Not significantly, but still enough. The transmission right now is more of a nuisance then an actual hindrance in the vehicle's performance. These are things I have come to accept in a vehicle that is in the process of being built for performance.
It resists going into 3rd gear, grinding noise? How does it shift from 3rd to another gear? When 3rd is engaged does it make a noise? Or only during the engagement?
Things I'd like to know if I'm considering purchase of the vehicle... thanks
No resistance going into third gear, just a grinding noise as you shift into third. It's a sure sign that the synchronizers within the transmission are going out. But amongst Nissans, this is a typical problem. It was only in the 05+ Maxima's where the third gear grind problem was resolved. There is no other noise other then that grind. It doesn't pop out of gear in third. There is no problem with getting into gear. Just that noise.
Ask around and you'll find that this is a common problem. Most with the 5spd have just learned to live with it. I'm also running synthetic Redline fluids in place of the OEM fluids in an attempt to stop any further damage but even that hasn't really helped reverse the damage already done. Also having replaced the shifter bushings, stiffening up the engine mounts and clutch have helped greatly reduce it, but again, it's still there.
Thanks man. I'm actually trying to convice a guy I work with to consider buying your car. Seems like a solid vehicle and he wants a quick car. He's looking at Cobalt SS's too but he can't really afford one, so I thought your car would be even better if he can get the cash together. Worst case scenario he gets a scrap yard tranny installed for a grand in a couple years. The synchros in 1st and 2nd gear also started making noise on my '96 Maxima, but other than the noise when decelerating, it wasn't really an issue. The gears themselves were solid @ 165k miles when I sold it
