car is too big to be a coupe.

Altima is a family car.

I like my four doors.

May not sell enough to make up for additional R/D, tool and die, production costs, etc. Could also potentialy take sales away from 350Z/G35 Coupe.

Although Toyota does seem to have success with the Solara, a coupe derivative of the Camry.

Hmmmm...

Some do, some don't. Nissan is in the latter group, Honda the former.

Nissan probably looked into it and decided the additional costs to develop and build a 2 door Altima were unacceptably high.

There's rumored to be a coupe (and maybe convertible) version coming with the next-generation Altima.

Cars like the solara and accord coupe are light sellers designed mainly to boost brand image and give a sense of sport to the model line. In the case of Nissan, they have pretty well established themselves as the performance japanese brand, typically having best in class power at the expense of some of the refinement shared by Honda and Toyota. For Nissan to make a coupe version of the Altima would require a hefty investment, and would likely be a sales slouch. In a sense, the 3.5 and the SE-R achieve for the Altima name what the Accord coupe and Solara do for their 4 door namesakes: They are flashy, fast versions that the magazines can write about and they can shoot exciting commercials of, even though when all is said and done most of the buyers still leave with the 2.5 models.
