Diesel emissions scam

This post has some relevance to Nissan because they do sell a Nissan Titan truck with a Cummins diesel engine. We wont even comment on the VW diesel emissions cheat scandal except to say that it is scandalous that the governments are allowing a 2 year window before the VW diesels have to get off the road or else be fixed. The next point I want to make is the real difference between gasoline engines and diesel engines as far as emissions are concerned is the amount of soot and the soot particle size that each type of motor produces. The governments have initiated special diesel filters and a urea acid treatment of the exhaust. They work to reduce the emissions to be compatible to gasoline emissions EXCEPT FOR 3 IMPORTANT POINTS. 1st There has been lots of cheating on both technologies so that many diesel trucks are still spewing pollutants into the atmosphere. Also the larger the truck the more pollutants allowed SHAMEFUL. The 2nd point is that the diesel soot standards were set so that all the new low sulphur diesel engines would pass the standard. The standard should have been set by measuring the difference in lung cancer deaths but governments rarely do this. Gasoline engines have a negligible amount of soot emissions. The 3rd and last point is that the testing machines have a limit on the smallness of the particle size that the testing machines can measure. Extremely small particle size of the soot from diesels cannot be measured but yet still harms our lungs. It is impossible to live in our society without breathing diesel exhaust at some point. The air quality in Europe where the diesel cars are almost 50 % of the total is shameful when compared to the much cleaner air in North America that has less than 5% diesels. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A CLEAN DIESEL.

The Mayor of Paris just announced they want diesels out of the city by 2020! And everyone drives diesels because the fuel is (was?) 30% cheaper.

There is no such thing as a clean diesel. A single absolute measure of diesel PM emissions does not exist. Since the very definition of diesel particulate matter is in fact determined by the PM measuring technique that is used ( contrary to gasoline emissions), all measures of diesel PM have a somewhat arbitrary character. Diesel particulate filters make the production of extremely fine soot particles even worse because by catching the larger particles the fine particles have nothing to bind to. The exact composition of diesel nanoparticles is not known. In addition to this, particulate matter testing machines have a limit of about 3 nanometers(nm ). Any soot particle of any size is bad for the human lung. The extremely small size particles harm human lungs even more because they get deepr into the lungs. Thus, particles smaller than 3 nm will cause cancer and they cant even be measured which means the whole emissions legislation is a big scam on human health.
