Random no power on takeoff

I have a 2004 Altima 2.5 with an automatic transmission. At random times on take off the car feels bogged down, won't accelerate and will not rev past 1,500 rpm. Then after getting some speed it will rev and act like normal. Yesterday after stopping on a hill, it failed to even move the car. After sitting in park for a minute it acted with no issues. I read about a high fluid temperature protection mode for the transmision and wondered if there was a sensor that could cause it to trip into that mode. I'm not throwing any codes about a high temp and it only acts up with no warninig or pattern.

Thank you

Have you looked at, and smelled, the tranny fluid yet? For that matter, how is the tranny fluid level? If the fluid is low, you'd get sporadic and worsening problems like this.

If the alternator was at fault, the dash lights would be lighting up.

If the cat system was failing it would be throwing codes.

The fluid was good, didn't smell burnt. In addition to reguraly being changed, I recently changed it (last week) and checked back on the level as well as the alternator due to chasing down a rough idle in gear. Didn't have a code thrown with the rough idle either but replaced everything that could contribute on the engine side to include: idler pully, serpentine belt, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, cam and crank shaft position sensors, throttle body, pcv valve and hose and the mass air flow sensor.

Wow...definitely showing some love with all those new parts...

I know this is a stupid question...but you did triple check the fluid type that your transmission needs?

Does it drive better or worse now (ie after all the part changes)? Were all those replacement parts bran new and OEM?

Yes, triple check on the fluid type. Overall, driving better after the parts. The thing about the transmsion is it's so inconsistent. It was fine right after the change and hadn't posed the problem for at least a week before the change. It is unpredictable.

Ok. Sounds like a bad electrical connection. The Gen3's were famous for corroded battery negative cables (where they attach to the engine). It's also possible you didn't properly reseat a connector on the MAF or cam sensor or.... Recheck all the electrics you've touched PLUS the battery cable (black).

How's the radiator? My prior car had those symptoms when the radiator was cracked.

That is interesting.

I wonder how the radiator being cracked would effect the engine stalling.

I know that if in limp mode the engine won't rev past 2k, but his wouldn't go above 1500 rpms which rules out limp mode.

These cars can be a PITA to diagnose when there is a problem.

It almost sounds like the torque convertor lock up is slipping.

Next time this happens drop the transmission in a lower gear, and see if that gets the engine to rev past 1500 rpms.

If the engine responds, and the car accelerates then I would bet its the TC. Of course mine threw a code saying the TC was bad, but being that my car has a different transmission, I can't say if your car would throw a code or not.

Not sure. Might be something to do with the computer not understanding the odd temperatures. All I know is it took several days for a forum like this to come up with that solution and my mechanic quickly verified it after actually checking the radiator.

As a side note, I was starting to tell this story to a friend of mine a week later and as soon as I said that I kept losing all power at the same stop light a mile from my house hes asked if it was the radiator. Apparently, if it happens to you, you remember.
