Has anyone changed their shocks and struts due to mileage and not due to broken or damaged parts or modifications? I have a lot of miles on my car and I never changed them. I was wondering if people here follow the recommendations of 50k to change them.
If someone were to change their shocks and struts wouldn't it make more sense just getting coilovers? What I mean is that new shocks and struts will cost around 600-700 dollars with labor. For about 200-300 more dollars you could get a good set of coilovers. Why don't people just get coilovers then?
I'm interested in Tein's basic set.

Yes, there are some people that replace them at 50k. I just installed my second set of KYB's on my car. The first set was installed at 45k when the car was lowered, and it was done more as preventive maintenance than anything else. Second set was put on at 100k because the rears had been blown out, but the fronts were done as well...just because. I also changed all of the struts in the '02 we recently got for my wife while I was installing her Tein springs at 60k on that car.
Having been in the auto parts industry for nearly 20 years, I have been to many manufacturers classes on shocks/struts, including KYB. They ALL say that the life expectancy of dampeners is around 40-50k miles. Most people never notice a difference in their ride quality because it deteriorates slowly over time. In the case of KYB (they manufacture the OE struts for the Altima), their aftermarket GR2 line uses higher pressure than the OE strut, and is designed that way to help compensate for other worn suspension items...ie bushings, etc.

Despite all the hell I get from my wife about playing with my car, the single MOST MODIFIED part of the car is the passenger side, rear window interior. It changes all the time depending upon what my stepdaughter has decided to smudge on there...
