Xterra: Regular or Premium

My sister is considering an Xterra and I told her to pretty much look at it as requiring premium for best performance and mileage, as with all VQ engines.
Isn't it true that on regular the VQ40DE retards the timing and doesn't run as good, also affecting mileage? Is regular safe to use on a regular basis?

Just finished reading the 06 Xterra manual (don't know about the 07/08 one) as I'm just about to purchase one. It states that the recommended fuel is 87 octane. Your sister would just be wasting money on the premium fuel.

Are you sure, because when we read the manual for the 07 it said premium recommended for best performance. A Nissan master tech also said this
Quote:
While 87 can run in the 4.0 liter engine I bet the use of premium will pay for it self in better fuel milage and longer engine life. I also reccomend energy saving motor oils. Castrol Syntec or Mobil One extended life oils. Some people get the idea I am saving 25 cents a gallon and forget 3 to 4 more miles a gallon that having the slower burning fuel allows the engine to run to its full pontential.
I'm going to look at the manual again.

87 is also recommended for the Titan, and I ONLY use Chevron.

Our '06 Pathfinder says Premium for best performance , but I always run regular , well unless I am towing , then I run Premium .... she will be fine with regular ...!

Yea, you will probably get a couple more HP using Premium , but I doubt it will ever be noticed ....
