Problems with 2001 Pathfinder in Detroit, MI

It started 4 months ago. When I started the vehicle in the morning, it started ok. as soon as I got out the parking garage, it missed for few seconds. it worked ok for rest of the day. it soon started missing right after I started it in the morning. rpm used to drop and engine stopped occasionally. for past few weeks it started missing while on the road and last week on my way to airport, it missed so much that speed did not go above 35.
My local nissan dealer says that timing sensor is bad and needs replacement. This is the same guy who 4 months ago said mass air flow sensor is bad. I didn't get it changed. Can I believe him?

Is the "check engine light" illuminated? Even if it isn't, swing by a Checker or Autozone and have them pull the diagnostic code. If a sensor is bad, it should show up.

yes, the "check engine" light has been on for a while. In fact last time when I drove the vehicle (on my way to the airport), the "check engine" light was blinking when I started the vehicle.
I just talked to the dealership today and he says that even after changing the timing sensor the car is driving "rough" and he needs to change the mass air flow sensor and spark plugs. Could it be just the spark plugs and the dealer is just fooling me by changing all those sensors?

Either way, I would still have them pull a code.

by the sounds of things your pathfinder is a r50 model with a vg33 engine. im from australia an over here spark plugs are changed every 40,000km and the fuel filter can cause a slight miss when badly blocked. so mixed with plugs, fuel and sensor issues i would personally change plugs and fuel filter. then get your nearest nissan dealer to erase all ecu trouble codes. then as soon as your engine light comes on, the code that comes up first, is the sensor that needs replacing.

if your engine is missing, check your spark plug wires if there all snug and not loose,or if there old and possibly damaged causing arcing meaning the spark isnt connecting directly to the plug, leading to misfiring and hesistation

mass air flow sensor would cause your vehicle to not pass a certain speed and drive miserably so bad youd probably pull over and get it towed.

a full tune up would be the best start if your a do it yourselfer, that would eliminate the basic stuff and maybe solve the problem,if not then let us know and well help you the best we can.
