Question Double-DIN Car Stereo

I hope this doesn't come off as a dumb question, but I'm in the market for a new car stereo. I've got a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder and instead of just replacing the OEM CD Changer, I'm thinking of getting a double-din car stereo. Unfortunately, there are a lot of websites out there that sell these types of stereo's with little or no documentation on if it will fit and/or if it needs an installation kit.

If anyone could shed some light on this subject regarding double-din stereo's, I'd appreciate it. Does all double-din slots fit double-din stereo's? Will I most likely need an installation kit? What about the rear plugs? Will I need any adapters?

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to stereo's so any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Aftermarket double din will fit your double din Pathfinder. I don't think you'll need an install kit, you'll probably reuse the metal brackets from the OEM unit and screw them into the aftermarket unit, but you'll need a wiring harness. What do you mean by rear plugs?

I'll need a wiring harness? Any specifics?

By rear plugs, I mean the OEM stereo has plugs that, I'm assuming, is proprietary for the installed stere/amp/speaker configuration. Will I need an adapter for the new stereo?

Almost any car stereo shop can hook you up with a wiring harness. It simply plugs into the stock harness and the other side is individual wires for hooking up your aftermarket player. Will probably cost $15-$20.

I don't think you'll need an aftermarket adapter to fit it into your Pathfinder. Check out Crutchfield.com, they will have all the info you might need. I'm not really all that familiar with the '01 Pathfinders to be the absolute authority on them. If it's somewhat close to the same double din configuration as my Altima, these is no need for an install kit.
