'89 D21 newbie question

Hey y'all!
My father-in-law just gave me his '89 D21 4x4 V6 SE King cab.
It's a pretty sweet ride, garage kept, less than 80k miles, blah blah blah.

I've been slowly fixing this and that, I have a Chilton, I'm not a newbie to cars, just to Nissan and this truck.

My question is this:

What is the trick to getting the clips back into the big plastic trim piece that goes across the tailgate?!
It's hanging kind of loose on either side of the tailgate latch and I'm worried it's going to blow off or something.

It looks like the clips might rotate to go in, but how do I rotate them back after the trim is on?
I took off the bed-liner piece on the inside of the tailgate but there's no access there...

It's been a few years since I had to replace my tailgate handle which required removing that trim piece. IIRC, you need to remove the whole trim piece to put the clips back on the black trim to be able to put it back onto the tailgate itself.
