Bigger Better Brakes

Does anyone know if there is an easy solution to getting better brakes for a 1991 d21 pickup?

Last brake job, I had Les Schwab put their ceramic Raybestes brake pads on. There are okay but i have had some scary brake scenarios.

I am patient and will take sure steps. I have researched everything from slotted cross drilled rotors, to fabricating brackets to mount a sent of killer 4 piston bremo's from a a late model porsche boxter s.

Hawk pads have been recommended. I was looking to find someone who knew of a swap with a nissan vehicle that had bigger brakes. The more info on the best way the better.

Yea, anything from Slob is going to suck ... I suggest new Brembo stock replacement rotors, Hawk HPS Pads, bleed the system with Motul 600 or ATE Superblue fluid and be sure to bed the pads in right !! That should make worlds of difference !!! Big brakes work good ... but most of that depends on the tires you have ... A huge 4 piston setup is going to be useless with stockish tires ... You will need a full on Z Rated performance tire to make a big brake setup work good ....

If you are really die hard into a big brake setup, I would just pull the brakes and rotors off a Titan and custom fit the caliper with Hawk pads ... also you may need bigger wheels to fit it all !!

Also be sure your rears are adjusted good and are in good shape ...!

Will the rotors off a titan fit on the hub of a D21?

Have 16" wheels and Mich ps2 tires. All good stuff, which is part of the problem. Where the stock tires and wheels would slip, these don't.

You would have to machine the centers .... another option I wasnt thinking about is Toyota brakes ... the Toyota 4x4 trucks have a large thick rotor that would be really close to going right on the Nissan truck and they have a 4 piston Caliper ..... My Dad is right in the middle of that setup on his 240Z ....But like any upgrade your going to have to fab something no matter what you do unless its a big $$ Kit ...

I still think the stock brakes with hawk pads would work good and be way less than having to fab a bunch of stuff ...

Thanks for suggestions. I will be hitting the junk yard in the next days and will do some measuring on the titan and I will hit the toyota while I'm there.

I have posted a link to my truck gallery for you to check out. I do spend time on the road course with this truck and I can't tell you how frustrating it is to have my buds flying past me because I have to break 70ft before they do going into turns.

A good set of drilled rotors and a performance pad will be a great jump in performance if you do not want to have to customize a setup. Let me know if i can be of any help with parts.

Solutions - After considering the options and doing my research, the first best step is to swap out the V6 heavy duty twin piston setup with the stock single piston set up. I will be installing the following in the next week.

1) Slotted / Dimpled rotors from R1concept.com
2) Hawk HPS Pads
3) Centric twin piston calipers (stock on V6 heavy duty)

Will report on the difference.

Also remember a good sticky tire will effect your brakes more than anything else you can do.

I agree, good tires are a must, that is why I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires on the truck.
