Grease seals front axle 2WD

I have replaced front rotors and calipers wheel bearings on my two wheel drive 720 pickup.
It is routine to always replace the front axle grease seals with this job.
However it is not clear which way to install the seal. The sketch in the factory manual is not clear, but seems to show the flat side of the seal toward the bearings.
When I removed the old ones they were installed with the flat side away from the bearings and the side with the round spring inside the grease cavity.
It looks to me like if the flat side is in toward the bearing, the rotating bearing cage could rub against where the rubber is sealed to the steel ring
Does it matter? The old ones did not leak. Can they go either way?
Thanks,
Richard
