Unhappy disapointed

We have owned a Versa for 35000 km or for a little over 1 year. Right from the beginning we were not impressed with the fuel economy that we were getting. The mileage worked out to an average of 34mpg. That is a combined city and highway calculation. The last tank now is down to 28 mpg. The dealership that we purchased the vehicle from kept saying that the economy will become better. They went as far as resetting thew computers and that made the fuel economy worst. Well we are all those km behind us and the extra cost of fuel we have put into the engine are becoming very frustrated. A product that was to give us an incredible fuel economy has given us nothing but an added expense I am so ready to never own another Nissan.
Is there anyone experiencing this and if so what did the dealership do for you.
Please help or give direction as what to do or who to contact about correcting a very frustrating problem that short of getting rid of a fuel guzzling 4 banger will solve.

34mpg is not that bad at all. Even 28 is not horrible for combined driving. Seeing that you are listing that you have 35000km on the car that tell me that your canadian, meaning your now in winter season....EVERY car gets slightly less milage than the summer avg when it's colder. Also a 6mpg difference can easily be seen by a difference in city vs high way or slightly more aggressive use of the pedal on the right. Fuel economy has every bit to do with the driver as it does with the car.

I get 26mpg in my 4.0L cherokee, when my wife drives it gets 22!

Thanks for that. we have 18000 miles (35000 km) on our 2007 versa. please the motor is broken in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. there is a serious computer problem that is what I believe. but the dealer WILL NOT ADMIT TO THAT. My explanation is that the car is run now by computer systems and depending on the chips installed that is the given mileage.

Unhappy Gas mileage...I can relate

Hi Ankit,

i just bought a new 08 Versa hatchbackin Gatineau Quebec. The gas mileage is horrible..about 70% more that was provided to me at the time of purchase. Got the car to the dealership to hear right off the bat that "ohh this is normal for the first 8 to 10000 km!" Considering this is my second vehicle, I will have to endure this for a year or so! No way! If this is soo normal why is it that they did not tell me this when I bought the car, I would not have bought it.
Of course after sending a fax to the dealership it took him 4 days to reply after I had to call him again and all of that to heart that he is going to explain to me what is happening to my car...can't wait for the BS!

On another note that maybe symptomatic of this company in Canada. I purchased extended warranty on October 20 (Date of purchase). I received the contract 2 days ago, in which I am advised that I can cancel it within 30 days of purchase of the vehicle..what a joke...Not impressed by either the dealership and Nissan Canada...will not buy another one for sure!

Make sure you usew synthetic oil that helps increase milage a tad bit and it's better in those cold Canadian winters

All engine have a break in period. Yeah your gonna get crap milage but if that was your deciding factor in not buying another nissan you could have got a used one that was already broken in and for alot less than a new one. Why would you buy an extended waranty just to cancel it. Stop crying and suck it up next time do your research.

My Civic's 1.6L and 4AT only get 25-28 in the city, and 32-35 on the highway. So don't worry.

We are talking US gallons right? Some people that I have talked to from Canada have used imperial gallons when talking fuel economy.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't know this was so old.

28-34 mpg is in the normal range, how a person drives also determines the MPG not just a computer. If you want better than 34MPG , PUSH IT! SHEEESH! I have owned 8 cars brand new off the lot and this one is the BEST and first Japanese car I ever bought. This VERSA sips gas and handles like a luxury car.

34 mpg is bad???

I can understand your frustration that the vehicle you purchased is not getting the mileage as advertised. However, much like what others have said, the mpgs will vary on your driving style. Keep in mind that within the first thousand kilometers, the engine mgt computer is learning how you drive, i.e. acceleration, deceleration etc. If you begin driving it like a bat out of hell, the computer will memorize this. Also, if you were interested in getting better gas mileage, the Toyota Prius might have been a better choice?

I would love to get 34 mpg, however, I drive a Titan that gets 18 mpg at best (with the wind, going down hill).
