the law is strict though, but still has holes. it doesn't stop a person from putting on an aftermarket muffler, just as long as it does not exceed the manufacture's db limit. so say a mustang with a saleen exhaust is legal, a
M GmBh muffler on your BMW is legal. all alty owners have to now do is install bigger resonators(secondary muffler) to bring the noise level and stop installing those damn N1 type exhaust without the baffle!!!
You're right it is 31 not 30. But I never said you can not put on an aftermarket muffler. The law says as long as the it does not go higher than what a stock muffler does.

The thing is most aftermarket mufflers are louder than stock.

you said it here

i got pulled over the other day and ticked to a "illegal exhaust" I told the officer that it was a tip... and the noise he heard was an exhaust leak comming from a hole that i have in my exhaust pipe.. he did not belive me and call it

take it to a muffler shop get it fixed and show proof it was a exhaust leak and not an illegal muffler.

Well, you knew it was a hole in your pipe which you failed to fixed. So you did get the ticket fairly. The law does say it was to be in working condition. Does not matter if he wrote illegal exhaust, as long as he got the section correct. Also, because it is a miving violation, any errors can be fixed on or prior of the corut date. Does not mean the ticket will get tossed out. Only parking tickets can be tossed out if there are any errors on the ticket.

for the life of me I don't know why I got a penal law ticket if 'illegal exhaust' violations are covered by vehicle traffic law. even if I pled guilty and payed the minimum $50, it would cost me more in the long run because i would have a misdemeaner on my permanent record!!! which would affect me tremendously since it would show up on all my job applications. and my job at the airport....poof! gone!

There is no such thing as equipment violations. All laws pertaining to vehicles are moving violations. (VTL). Equipment just has to do with the "EQUIPMENT" on the vehicle not your driving skills. They are all VTL. So yes, an illegal muffler is a "moving violation".

Yes. Like I said before anything having to do with a vehicle is under the V ehicle T raffic L aw. Even some parking summons are under the VTL.

Also unrelated, just a tid bit for DWI. Even though the vehicle is not moving, but if you are in the vehicle driver's seat and key in ignition but not on you can be charged with DWI. So if you are ver drunk and want to sleep in your car do it in the passenger seat, or back seat.

Go read my other thread.

Technically there is. But it all depends on the judge, but usually the judge does not add points. This goes for all violations. For a light if it is fixed within 24hrs, all you have to do is go to any P.D. and show it to them and they will give you a letter saying it was fixed and you send it in with the summons and it will get dismissed. But good luck with going to a NYC P.D. they will just kick you out cause they don't have time for that.

so if you get a lawyer with a bunch of tickets what happens.. will alot of the tickets be reduced and then you just have to pay fines.. is it always smart to get a lawyer whenever you get a ticket.. I was going 60 in a 30.. anybody offer any advice and I was playing with my radio and i crossed the middle line.. granted it was like 2am and there was no one on the road except the speed trap.. so i got 2 tickets.. should i get a lawyer
