The Egyptians, Romans and even Druids all used a evergreen trees to celebrate the winter solstice and believed it was a representation of prosperity and eternal life. Many other cultures including pagans worshipped the trees for centuries.

The "christian" version known as the Christmas tree did start until the 1500s and were mostly used during that time as a form of welcoming the upcoming spring rather then the events we see now.

So in all fairness the Christians just took a symbol already in use for thousand's of years and made it their own.

Granted most of us have grown up with the name Christmas Tree instilled in our head, but it is not purely a Christian tradition.

Actually, it was banned in many places and not recognized as a religous centerpiece up until the 1850's in America...so America changed it's views once before. The Christian movement in the US, created the US version of the Christmas Tree.

I don't disagree that it should be called a Christmas tree, but saying that it only can be called that is very wrong. In short, besides the concept of seperation of church and state, I can see why people believe it should be called generically, a holiday tree.
