it's 4 confirmed but many are missing.

just so sad - now someone will be held accountable for not acting on past reports that clearly labled the bridge as deteriorating.

^ I just heard that the bridge was recently inspected and passed it just fine. The restoration that was being done to it was just to the pavement, nothing structural.

The study suggested that the design of bridge's main truss could cause a collapse if one of two support planes were to become cracked, although it allowed that a collapse might not occur in that event. But, the study concluded, "fatigue cracking of the deck truss is not likely" and "replacement of the bridge ... may be deferred."

Two years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Bridge Inventory database said the bridge was "structurally deficient."

The Minneapolis Star Tribune quoted Jeanne Aamodt, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, as saying the department was aware of the 2005 assessment of the bridge.

The bridge received a rating of 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. A bridge receives a rating of 4 when there is "advanced section loss, deterioration, spalling, or scour."

My wife drove over that just a half hour before it went down. If she left work at her usual time she might have been on the bridge

I am very, very interested to see what actually caused this, and how this will affect the way we engineer and inspect the state bridges.

The contractor was performing a low-slump overlay which is a non structural component of the bridge. However, they had all sorts of equipment, and people jackhammering, and skid-steers (Bobcats) with larger jackhammers working on the bridge throughout the weeks. A fellow engineer had mentioned to me that there may be several factors that could lead to the failure, including the extra construction loads and vibrations, high temperatures, and any possible existing weaknesses.
The bridge was open the entire time during construction, closing only half of the lanes to perform jackhammering and laying of the concrete overlay.
