Just sharing here because I want to spout about it, but I can't exactly do it to my coworkers.
I interviewed to take a position teaching Networking and Repair at a Vocational High School. It is as a "Long term substitute", however, it is fairly safe to assume that the current instructor is not coming back, due to her health issues. If she does not return, this leaves the position open.
Now, I don't have any of the credentials required for teaching, aside from 7+ years of direct industry experience. However, they will pay for my education and the Department of Education will let me teach the course as long as I complete 3 courses per year towards my teaching certification and an Associates Degree in my field.
The part most interesting about this is, I didn't apply. The school called me directly, before listing the ad in the paper. I was made a tentative offer during my interview yesterday, pending a few things and was told I'd hear for sure today. 75% comp'd insurance, sick/vacation time, compensated education... Good stuff.
I'm somewhat nervous, just because I've never done anything like this before. The other concern is that interest in the shop has been low. However, both myself, and the administration, believe that this is a fault of the teacher, not the students. The hope is that I can come in and revitalize the program with a different approach.
All in all it is a very interesting prospect, and I can't wait to give it a shot and tell my current company goodbye. I haven't been happy here for a long time and this may be the perfect time for me to get out.
CN: Finding out today if I'm going to be a teacher.
