It is a tough call. Being a cop can not be fun. I have met some good ones and some bad ones. I think even the bad ones were at one time good ones that got beaten down by the job. 31 times might be excesive but in that situation you fire your first magazine and then you still hear gun shots near you so you reload and fire again. You can not take the chance that it is your partners or the perp shooting.
I can not believe that they did not convict the black cops however. I am pretty sure that Bush commented on it and ordered the judge to convict them and aquite the white guy. Everybody know that Bush hates black people. I am sure that he is ordering a justice department investigation of how the black cops got off.
remember, there's also that case on Long Island where a black man shot and killed a white teen with an illegal gun at the end of his driveway, and he's not going to jail. His justification was he thought his home and family were going to be lynched by a group of white teens. He could have easily ran back into his home and dial 9-1-1 instead.
That story will never see the light of day.
Black on white crime rarely makes national headlines - unless it involves an attractive young, white female of course.
But brothers like that idiot piss me off because they make it so much easier for truly racist white folks to hate on black people.
Most members of the black community are perfectly law abiding citizens and don't get caught up in the crap that only seems to make the news.

It was a shitty situation for everyone involved, and I don't think the cops should have necessarily been convicted...but, I think there should be some changes made to the way police are trained and a tighter set of parameters should apply to when cops can open fire. Perhaps a civil lawsuit against the PD would encourage the change.

There are tight rules and regs on when an Officer can pull there gun, well at least in Memphis there is! Like my sister said, those cops shouldn't have never pulled there gun and opened fire on them while they were trying to flea! For them to be found innocent of everything, is a total slap in the face!

Did she tell you anything about those rules, or did she just give you her impression of the situation? I'd imagine it was the later, but if not, please tell. It's probably something like an "eminent danger" test, which is IMO way too ambiguous for life or death situations.

Great minds think alike......
Mentioned the use of "deadly force" earlier, but "eminent danger" is a precursor of said force. Seems we have criss-crossed on several threads recently, with you taking articulation ftw.

She didn't explain any terminology to me, she just said that situation (from what we know) they should'nt have pulled their guns and fired. Also the fact that they were all in the car trying to FLEE, was all the more reason for them to be charged for excessive force. This definitely one of those situations that should've been caught on tape!

Like I said a few posts back, if you even graze a cop while trying to flee, seems the official policy is to shoot the driver immediately as it is justification for the use of deadly force.
Imo, unless the driver is clearly trying to harm the cop with the vehicle, not just bumping/grazing while trying to flee arrest, then pulling his gun should be the absolute last resort.
IMO the only time your fire that many bullets is if there is a guy in the middle of the street with an ak-47 , using it !!! to empty out a gun of 17 rounds then put in a new clip and keep going is criminal , its homicide !!! if they all started shooting at about the same time 2 cops stopped after 3 and 4 rounds , then the third cop stopped after 11 , 4th cop kept going firing 31 rounds . that means 3 cops watched as there partner re-loaded and emptied his gun again !!! along with the fact that stray bullets where found 1 block away which makes this ok-corral incident extremely reckless !!!
the cops could have moved out of the way , or just not stood in front of the car , the driver in the car didn't run over any cops , i believe only one cop hurt his knee . and even if the driver is trying to hit the cops then the fact that there are still 3 passengers in the car that aren't driving , so you can't just open fire to stop one guy and run the risk of hitting others .
