“Why do I have to tip people for doing their job?” To them I respond, “Does the company you work for give bonuses after a project is completed successfully?”
No, no they don't. I've never worked in a place that does this. The successful completion of a project is, in fact, your job...if the project has been assigned to you.
I tip service people that I know are not making a regulr wage...waitresses, etc...but only if they provide at the least decent service. If I go to a restaurant with my family, get ignored by the waitress, get the wrong order and a bit of an attitude, then that person gets no tip.
I also generally don't tip at sandwich shops where they do nothing but stand behind the counter, make my sandwich and ring me up...I don't tip at McDonald's, why here for the same service?
I don't tip delivery drivers, but thats only because I haven't had delivery in 6-7 years. Live outside the delivery radius, so I get nothing.

I follow all of those rules for tipping and quite frankly, tipping does ensure better and faster service. If you do it often enough and to the right people, you get top notch service.
I went to a wedding the other day and dropped the bartender a $20 off the bat. When the party was 2-3 hours there was a line at the bar. I went straight to the front and the guy served me next, no questions asked. I just quietly stood to the side and the bartender immediately took care of me.
I agree with the rest that tipping for doing your job gets me pissed, like the guys at the deli or the grill who makes my food. I hate to see a ****ing tip jar in front of me. I have now started to see tip jars at subways sandwich places

Are you serious? I've received bonuses for project completion in the ranges between 5% - 33% of my salary. For reference, the 33% was payment for the successful merger between my old company and my new one, so it was also factoring in incentive not to leave and was pre-announced to me (and about 30 other people in our operation of 1,000 here in Syracuse).

Completely agree. The few places we order out/dine at/patronage (ie. tailor) often, we get AMAZING service because we tip extremely well to the people. We even get seated ahead of other people because we are regulars who they know are going to be good customers.
The housekeeping one is one that is often overlooked and the tattoo one, hell, I would be afraid to ever go back to my tattooist if I didn't tip her. Because I tip her very well, I also get premium time slots and she'll actually adjust her schedule with other people to get me in within a week of me requesting ink, where she normally is booked 4 - 6 months out.

Tow Truck. It depends on what services the person provides. If they jump your car or change your tire, tip about $4. If they tow it, $5 is good tip. If they are towing you away from a no parking zone, give them the finger.
Question for you guys who have worked at a resturant or know proper tipping ettiquite...
If you order a to-go order from a resturant and call in and place an order to pick-up, are you suppose to tip them? I don't mean you place a reserve in the resturant and you're dinning INSIDE the resturant but you're just picking up some food to-go.
I've been doing this alot for the past few years since
1. I don't like waiting in long lines to get a table to eat at a resturant.
2. I know I am hungry ATM so I like to order in advance so I can eat when I want to.
3. I don't have to sit and wait for someone to cook my food and bring it out to me.
4. You have to tip when eating inside a resturant with a waiter/waitress serving you.
When I do pay to pick up my to-go order and they go get my change I do tell them to "not worry about it and keep the change." But I do give the exact amount sometimes...
What's your take on this??

I hate the concept of tipping, but concede to it for certain services where it is the cultural norm.
However, I guess we can't complain. The expectation for tipping here in North America is still preferred over the scenario in some middle eastern countries where you have to BRIBE. Forget "tipping" for the guy that carried or loaded/unloaded your bags... in some places if you want to get your luggage period (after getting off a plane or whatever) you better pay the bribe! Or you may not get it back.

i give them up a dollar. one of the places i regularly go will sometimes give me a free desert.
and at the Starbucks I go to on the weekends, I usually get my order by the time I get to the cashier, if there is a line.

Restaurants are shit these days. Theyll try to get you to pay a double tip by including it in the bill. We went to Olive Garden one night with a large group of people. My old man paid the waitress a tip, they came back with the bill, "gratuity included". He ended up blowing 50 bucks for tip alone, he didnt notice till it was too late. (And my dad had worked as a cook in a restaurant for 15 years, so he knows how the tipping system should work). Ive heard from others having this problem at Olive Garden and similar restaurants.
