Well they are clones. Slight differences and I'm pretty sure parts are not interchangeable. Rock Island (and I'm sure others as well) offer 'upgraded' parts like skeleton hammer/trigger. I'm not a huge fan of them, but they offer a different look.
I don't have any real guns at the moment, but those will change when I have my own house someday. Here's what I do have though, which I haven't used in a few years WTF I EDITED THE PICS AND THEY ARE STILL MESSED UP

this is for adults only coco. hahaha. nah, but i used to go paintballin all the time in hs, but thats not the tippmann i remember using.. mine was the og model i guess. i remember getting capped by a 1o yr old close range n bleeding from the neck. FAIL.
you can get a 16+1 mag for the .40 cal XDM, not much difference from 20 clip and a hell of a lot more knock down power. they are great guns, like the reviews say, and i cant remember exactly how much it was but ur looking at anywhere from high $300s to over $500 depending on which one you want. i would check out cheaperthandirt.com, they seem to have pretty low prices.
Thanks for the tip. The xdm 9 and 40 seem to be about the same price but since this will be my first gun I want to start off with a 9mm. It's not that I can't handle the recoil of a higher caliber firearm or that I'm not accurate with them. I just believe that while stopping is less for 9mm, it is offset with higher round count, in this case, cheaper ammo (which means more bullets and more time at the range to practice), and I feel that all this will lead me to be more accurate with the gun.
After I get my XDM I'll probably start saving for my next firearm purchase, a Kel-Tec KSG shotgun.

yeah i see why your going that route, im sure you'll be happy with either choice. and damn, that doesnt even look like a shotgun, it looks like some sort of army weapon.
First up is a Springfield/Savage Arms .22 LR with a Bushnell 3x8, pretty standard, it was givin to me by my Grandfather.
Next I believe it is a Mosin Nagant 7.62x54 not too sure, it used to have a wood stock but it was dropped and the wood stock broke so I replaced with a synthetic. It also was converted from having a straight bolt lever to an angled bolt lever. This was givin to me from my Father.
Next Russian millitary surplus AK-47, 7.62x39, semi-auto and came with two 30 round clips. I have alot of fun with this gun and I have probably put over three thousand rounds through it and never a single problem.
Next a Charter Arms .357 Mag Pug, this is the gun I carry for now, and sleep with beside my bed. Next to it are some Federal .357 Hydra Shoks and my Bianchi behind the back leather holster, and a speed loader.
