I really wish I could run a full ATX. I give up like 4 PCI ports coming down to Micro...not to mention the lack of availability of USB 3.0

I have never really let Windows *do its thing* because (quite honestly) Windows has NO IDEA what it wants to do and how to do it well...at least for us devs and nerds .

If you can point me to a nice Gigabyte mobo, that would be great! Needs to have AM3/3+ socket and be Micro ATX
Yeah. Luckily Wifi cards are becoming more popular using USB instead of a PCI interface. I have a Netgear N300 USB wifi adapter which actually surprised me with speed/range.

Usually I don't like Windows touching my partitions either, but Win 8 didn't let me choose. It had no prompt to cancel the scan and repair which is really annoying. How set are you on the processor you posted up before? If you aren't too set on it, AMD's A8-3850 has a better CineBench Benchmark rating (3.45 for the A8 vs a 3.28 on the FX-4170) on TomsHardware.com and it has a better GPU built in. This CPU would let you get a Motherboard like the Gigabyte GA-A75-D3H FM1 AMD A75 board which would give you 3 PCI slots, 2 PCI Express 2.0 x16, 2 PCI x1, USB 3.0, HDMI, and the ability to run fast RAM (1866 MHz).
Depending on how few PCI slots you're willing to go down to 2 PCI slots, then this one is pretty decent and it comes with 8GB (2x4GB) of GSKILL RAM: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-A75-UD4H FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Another option would be the A10 which I don't think TomsHardware has benched yet, but it should be an improvement over the A8. The A10 has the newer 7xxx series video chipsets too which from what I've heard are really nice.
Newegg.com - AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 7660D AD580KWOHJBOX
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-F2A85X-D3H FM2 AMD A85X (Hudson D4) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Problem man...all the mobo's you listed are ATX. I need micro-ATX (stupid effing case).

I don't mind that processor you listed. I do want the fastest application processor I can get (I am not a PC gamer, 4 cores is fine for me ) so I won't have to upgrade for the foreseeable future. I would have to find a new mobo for the processor you listed though!

Let the hunt commence

Sorry about that. I thought I had checked off Micro-ATX on Newegg but I probably forgot. I'll check out some that are actually Micro-ATX this time lol

EDIT:
A few A8 Options:
Gigabyte: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128516
It doesn't have HDMI though which is really surprising considering that's pretty standard now..
ASRock (Budget version of Asus): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157260
According to the reviews I've read it's a pretty decent board. I've heard good things about ASRock. Supposedly it's Asus' mid-range/cheaper price options but they still perform really well for the price.
Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131871
The reviews seem to be pretty good on this board as well.

The only negatives that seem to be common among the ASRock and Asus boards are a BIOS that is hard to navigate (if you need to go into it that is).

Here's an option for the A10:
Micro-ATX Gigabyte Motherboard for the A10: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128572

Personally, I would run the A10 for the better built in graphics and processing capability, but there are arguments for the A8 as well.

Curious then. What is the difference between the FX 4170 and the A8? Besides socket type and processing speed

I believe they're two different internal architectures. The FX-4170 I'm pretty sure was prior to the AMD-ATI merge and the newer A8/A10s were afterwards. The A8/A10 also have built in GPUs whereas the FX series doesn't and relies on an onboard video chipset on the motherboard (which is usually lower quality). The FX series supposedly comes unlocked which allows for easier overclocking than the A8/A10 unless you get the "Unlocked" version. (The A10 that I linked earlier is unlocked in case you want to get into overclocking later on lol). The A8/A10 run on 100W as opposed the 125W that the FX requires which will likely cause it to run cooler due to less power. There are probably other differences too but I can't seem to think of any others right now lol.

Okay. That is pretty much what I thought. Hence the price on the FX being so low. However, for doing what I am doing, I am not sure if I need that great of video right now...and if I do in the future, can't I just throw a video card in my PCI slot? (giggidy).

If that is the case, I would take the faster processor every time and just rely on my onboard. LMK lol

MEEE.

My music-production/web-dev/mild-gaming rig. Built it in 2009, upgraded it somewhat since.

AMD Phenom II X4 960T (overclocked to 3.6GHz) on a Gigabyte 785G MicroATX board
8GB DDR2-1066
XFX HD4850 1GB (really old, I know, but still kickin' surprisingly well)
Crucial M4 64GB SSD (this thing is amazing)
500GB Western Digital Caviar Black
M-Audio 2496 (card)

Also, I agree with Nismo's CPU advice.

Good combo considering the board. An A10 would be better, but that is the highest-end A8 so it looks good. I'd do it.

A10 is too pricey for right now. I like the mobo a lot and the cpu appeals to me lol. I am probably going to order up this beast

So here is my current Newegg Wish List. If any of you have a HDD lying around in SATA, let me know:

Maybe I'm biased, but you sure about that Seagate? Pretty much everyone I know and myself have had poor experiences with Seagate hard drives. Premature failure and DOA galore. Personally I'd go with a WD Caviar Black for performance and quality.

I am not sold on the Seagate. I am actually trying to get one from my developer here at work. I really don't want to spend a ton on an HDD cuz I have 3 at home. Just none are big enough....

Yeah. I'm pretty sure the GPU's on the A8/A10 are built as separate parts of the chip now so it shouldn't cause your PC to run slower performance wise. My i7-2600k has Intel Graphics built in, but I have a dedicated card so I have the built in GPU disabled via the BIOS. Looking at "Computation" benchmarks, the A8 outperforms the FX-4170. The A8/A10 was designed to more closely compete with the corresponding Intel i chips.

I've had 2 Seagates with no issues, but I definitely prefer Western Digital over Seagate. WD has a better reputation imo.
I've purchased a WD Caviar Black and Blue drive before and both are still running strong and fairly quiet (or maybe I just can't hear the drives over the fans lol).
Here's a 1TB WD Caviar Black for the same price as that Seagate: Newegg.com - Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
It's also $5 cheaper @ Microcenter.com: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WD1002FAEX - OEM WD1002FAEX - Micro Center

The case looks really cool. It'll look pretty sick with the LEDs on. I love the side window. I almost went with one similar to that but then I came across the LanBoy Air (pic) which I ended up going with since it was all modular and had slots for 15 fans with all mesh panels. It looks awesome, but dust gets in there so easily and its a pain to clean. If the power supply has the same internals as the 500W that they sell without the case (Newegg.com - RAIDMAX RX-500AF Continuous 500 watts ATX 12V v2.3/EPS 12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply) then it should be pretty decent based on the reviews.
