I didn't read the whole entire article (It''s late) but wow that's news to me! I guess they are getting greedy? Maybe AMD can take the reigns or does Intel have the last say in it? I never thought I would, but I'm actually running AMD and ATI right now and I have no complaints. Someone better keep making new things!
Thanks nismos. I will look at those tomorrow when I get back on my laptop. I am formatting a 250gb drive tonight. Its going to take all night lol.
DVD drive I have. Its old and the tray motor,is shot, but it works. I don't use the drive a lot anyway.
On a side note. I put my old PC back together. I booted Linux to it only to figure out that it has crapped the graphics card. Great.
I ordered everything up tonight. With the drives I have and the one I bought, I will have 1.5tb of storage across 3 drives
No problem. I figured you probably already had one but I just wanted to make sure lol. Wow that sux - I hate when parts fail. I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS over my Windows 8 partition. I was going to shrink Win 8 to make my PC tri-bootable but apparently the Windows 8 important updates corrupted the partition table on its own partition in addition to corrupting my Windows 7 drive. Crazy thing is, my wireless card isn't plug n play with Ubuntu so I had to boot up one of my laptops and share the Internet connection through Ethernet haha.

I saw that on CNet too. I see why they would want to move away from it, but if they do they're going to lose a lot of sales to AMD. Hopefully it's just a scare to try to increase sales right now.

Oh yea! I have to have a wireless card compatable with Linux lol.
Why didn't you just create a VM and boot Ubuntu on that? That would have protected that partition .
All drives are formatted. Waiting on the Newegg truck!!!!!

If you use a VM then your internet connection from the host OS is bridged to the virtual machine (at least that's how Virtual Box has always worked for me). If you're making Linux bootable installed on another partition then the wifi card will need to be Linux compatible. I initially had it setup as a VM on Win7 but couldn't get the display size past 800x600 on my 1080p monitor with Virtual Box so I just made it a bootable separate disk.
During the install you'll either want an anti-static wristband or install the PSU and plug it in so you can touch the metal parts of the case to ground any static charges you build up from walking on carpeting and stuff.
I am going to VM linux on the windows 8 bootable drive. It should be easy using the installed windows VM wizard. It would suck if it had some low ass resolution like that though! I have a 30" LED monitor I would like to take full advantage of lol.

Already have an ESD wrist-strap
Yeah. I'm not sure what Windows has for options using their program, but hopefully it lets you change the resolution. That was one thing I was disappointed about with Virtual Box.
I went to BestBuy and picked up a Netgear WNCE2001 Wireless Adapter designed for Blu-ray players and devices that only have ethernet. Since Ubuntu was fine with an internet connection shared from my laptop, I had a feeling this would work better than trying drivers out and returning stuff that didn't work. After debugging it for a bit I was able to get it all set and online. So far I can't complain.
I've built two. My first was ~7 years ago (when I was 12 lol) and the other was 1.5 yrs ago.
My latest build:
Core i7-2600K (4.2GHz OverClocked from 3.4GHz)
Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz 8GB RAM (OverClocked to 1866MHz)
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 Motherboard
Gigabyte Super Overclock Series GTX 560 Ti Windforce 1GB 256-bit
Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB HDD 64Mb Cache SATA 6.0GB/s
Patriot Torqx2 32GB SSD
LG Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Burner Drive with LightScribe Technology
Thermaltake Black Widow 850W Power Supply
9- 120mm Blue Computer Fans (expandable to 15)
Antec LanBoy Air Blue/Black Computer Case
AMD processors will definitely have better built in graphics, but the Intel processors are more powerful out of the box. From my experience, if you want an AMD to perform as well as an Intel, it has to be overclocked. If you aren't going to do any gaming on it though, it should be plenty good. I don't have any experience with MSI boards but heard they're junk after a year or so... I've always bought Gigabyte mobos since I've had pretty good luck with them. I almost bought an Asus board but heard from a few people they require more "setup" to get it to work nicely. As for the Power supply, depending on your plans for dedicated graphics cards later on 500W's might not be sufficient but it will depend on the card you go with. Corsair PSU's also tend to be pricey but if you can get a deal on one around the holidays, they're a good choice. Definitely go with HDMI for hooking it up to your TV. VGA is a really low-resolution alternative and the quality might not be pretty on a 30" monitor. VGA on my 23" looks a bit pixely. G.SKILL RAM is good quality. I've always gone with Corsair because I had no issues with it in my old build. I'd recommend a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive. They're good quality and reliable. I have a Hitachi hard drive in my laptop and it's starting to make louder and louder noises when used that sound like birds chirping.
Be careful with Win 8. If you dual boot it and Win 7 or some other OS is installed on another drive, Windows might try to be kind and "Scan and Repair" your other partitions. It did that to me after installing some updates. It totally corrupted everything on my Win 7 partition. Contacted Microsoft to see if they could help me salvage it based on the updates installed, but all they wanted to do was Remote Desktop to my PC so that he could get the information that I had already provided him.
I would imagine a VM should be safe from feeling the wrath of Win 8 though
8GB is more than enough for me. I've only hit ~35% RAM usage so adding more wouldn't actually be beneficial. It would be there but would basically never be used. It always sounds better when there's more RAM though

Yep. Depending on the size of it, you would have to get a motherboard that fits that particular case but that wouldn't be too hard to find.
