A Spooks Tale

Okay boys and girls, gather round as I tell you the story of how and why I got out of the spook business. It'll be long so please bear with me. I'm not the greatest of writers so I hope I don't bore you too much. I'll do my best to provide you with as much detail as to the events that had happened as well as some background info as well. Since alot of the information is still classified, i'll will not be using real names, giving locations, or naming agencies involved. To make things easier for you to read and understand I will give you a key so that things are more understandable.

Agency A (AA) = This is the agency I worked for
Agency B (AB) = This is another agency that worked on the same side but ends up screwing me in the end.
CO = commanding officer
Dead Drop = a point where information is dropped off and picked up later by another party
Spook = field agent/spy
Intelligence (intel) = information/data

Beginnings
I entered the Army a few months after graduating high school. I did all my training and language studies and was now preprared to begin my role as a field interrogator. Since I am of mixed descent, it made it easy for me to blend into different cultures. A few higher ups took note of this. For the first few months i was stuck in a comm room over at NSA listening to intercepted traffic from south america. My job at the time was to listen, translate, and decode for any possible flags (basically something of interest to the US gov't). All in all, it was pretty boring. Occaisionally I might get some guy talking about this girl he just f***ed but that was about the extent of the excitement i got.

A slot opened up for field work in South America and they asked me if I was interested in taking it. I jumped at the chance to get away from a desk. I went out for special training and got briefed on my identity, where I would be living, and a few contacts that I could trust in case things got hairy. With that, i left the US for south America to begin what wouldbe the start of my career as a spook. Since I was only 18 at the time (soon to be 19) my assignments in the beginning were more to get my feet wet to see if I'd work out or just end up getting myself killed. My cover was just as a freelance photographer, and came from a wealthy family. My main job was to capture intelligence. Since my cover wsa as a photographer, I had a legitemate excuse to go around and take pictures. What I was mainly looking for though were base of operations, field movements from enemy opposition, and any other intel that might prove handy.

A Rising Star
I was proving to be a very capable and resourceful spook and was rising among the ranks. AA was very pleased with the intel I was providing and I managed to build myself a pretty decent network of informents. Some of which would manage to get me deep inside into enemy territory. I have already been in South America for almost 9 months without getting caught or into any firefights.

The big drawback to my cover is that I couldn't carry a firearm. Contraary to what you see in movies and television, most spooks on the whole do not carry firearms. One because they can get and are heavy which can prove to be a nuisance and two, you are more likely to be burned (cover blown) if you are caught carrying a weapon. Since I was a photographer I had no justification for carrying a sidearm (note: I did have one though in my flat for those just in case times). Good thing I never carried any firearms though since I had been searched many times. When I got inside to some enemy operations, I was thoroughly searched for weapons. Once inside though, it was easy for me to take picks. Some of these guys loved to showoff for the camera and I was more than happy to oblige. I would try and set them in places so i could get them and my main objectives like what wa going on in the background. Of course alot of these shoots turned out to be a waste of time. I had concducted well over 30 missions without one problem or flaw hence my popularity with the higher ups.

Back Home
After being there a little over a year, they decided to pull me out and bring me back home. They decided to close shop where i was since not much was really going on there. They kept a few people in station but they were maintained by Agency B.

Unfortunately, about a few weeks after I returned back home I got stuck back at my old job manning a listening post. My work in South America though had not gone unforgotten.

A few months pass by and a new storm is brewing over in Europe. Things go a little sour and both agencies decide they need more people inside to gather intel. So I get sent out to language school to learn a new language and when i am not in school, I am in briefings learning about all the background information on the territory i would be working in.

In the Field Again
Since my cover had already been established, AA decided, I would just use the same cover since it would prove to be beneficial to my assignment. Also, i would be hassled alot less. Drawback to it though was that i had no diplomatic cover. So if I got caught, I was on my own. I wasn't worried too much at the time though since I had already worked under the same guidelines when I was in South America. Little did i know of what was to come.

A Brewing Storm
Well, things turned out okay from me and i was managing to survive without any unneeded complications. At least that's how things were going on my side of operations.

AB had run into a huge problem. One of their spooks had gotten himself killed. How he died, I don't know. All the evidence pointed to an accident. So the rest of AB's ops continued on unhindered.

AB contaced AA to see if they could borrow me since I was operating close to their agents location. AB also wanted to know if we knew anything that could point to foul play in the loss of their agent.

My CO informed me of what was going on and that i was now working under AB as well as AA. My life has now gotten complicated. I was already managing my own contacts but AB also wanted me to keep in contact with their lost agents contacts as well. At least it wasn't too difficult or so it seemed. I basically was just going to and from the dead drop and then delivering the intel to AB. So I basically was a messenger as opposed to having to manage them. I do this for a few weeks until...

From Good To Bad To OH F***!!
Sometimes when things are too good to be true, they usually are. One of AB's former agents contacts had proved to be a valuable asset to them and a credible source. Black (that's what I'll call this agent) provided accurate and reliable intel to AB.

Something had happened and Black furnished AB with some excting intel. Basically news of some (sorry I can't tell you what kind) weapons being moved.

AB tells me that they want me to meet up with Black and for me to bring a sidearm with me. Another AB agent would be tagging along as well. Now I am getting worried.

Have you ever woken up in the morning and you knew that something terribly bad was going to happen? Today was that day for me.

I went out and met up with AB's agent and we proceeded to the meetinp point with Black. Black was to lead us to where the weapons cache was and we were going to try to get in and inspect it. Little did I know that we were being setup.

It turns out that our good ol friend Black was a double agent. The dead drop had already been marked out by the opposition, thanks in part to Black. They decided to let it, keep running to see how many of us (spooks) they could catch both foreign and traitors (basically a witch hunt). Once they spotted me making a pickup they had agents follow me which in turn allowed them to see who I was in contact with. Things were falling apart without us even realizing it.

Eagle (this will be AB's agents name) started to notice something was off, I did as well. When we were almost to where Black was at, something just seemed weird. I can't really explain it, call it spooks intuition. We decided to turn around and not meet up with Black. We walk about 10 feet, and all of a sudden, a bullet whizzes right by us. We break apart and look for cover. We look around trying to see where the shot came from. From all accounts, it seems that it came from Blacks location. A few more shots are fired and we notice about 6-7 rebels come out from Blacks location. Our immediate thought was that they found out about Black, killed him and were waiting for us. I couldn't afford to get caught. If I got caught, there would be no rescue mission since officially I was there on my own accord and I was also there under a false identity. Eagle and I decide to make a break for it and run. More shots are fired at us and we decided to return fire. One of them gets hit in the leg and falls in pain. We keep moving hopefully finding safety.

Safety is kind of like an oxymoronic term in this case considering we are in the middle of a war zone. So we just hope we find some allies. Or somebody willing to help. Eagle and I manage to take out 3 of our pursuers during the course of the chase. We find an abandoned building and decide to make a stand in there. It was a long shot but our only chance.

2 rebels enter the building. We split up in the hopes that we can flank them. I come around and see one of the rebels pass right by me without noticing me. I chacked to see if i was clear. Nobody else wsa around, so I slowly got up took my aim and shot him in the back of the head. The other rebel heard the gunshot and ran to where it was fired. Eagle fired and placed 2 rounds into the rebels back.

Unfortunately, we did not realize that there was another rebel inside. He grabs Eagle and starts shouting for me to come out. Yelling if i do not show myslef, he will kill my friend. I know if I show myself we are both as good as dead. Best I can do is stay hidden and hope for a shot to present itself. Luckily, my patience pays off or so I think. I get my opportunity to shoot and I take it. Unfortunately due to the angle I was at. I missed is head and shot him in the shoulder. He falls down in pain but also as a reaction he accidentally pulls the trigger hitting Eagle twice in the back. Eagle falls down as well. I run up and place a well aimed shot into the final rebel.

Eagle is still alive miraculously. He took to shots in the back neer his shoulder, but he was bleeding pretty bad. I carried him out and headed to my flat since it was the closest thing nearby where I could contact for help. A few hours pass by without incident and both Eagle and I are extracted.

Politics
Well, after the incident, the perverbial shit hit the fan. AB was furious and up in arms over the whole incident. They were hellbent on framing me for the whole thing and citing that I was the cause as to why we had to close shop in the particular operating location. They accused me for screwing up and leaving "crumbs" for the opposition to pick up and because of that they lost an invalueble resource (Black). Luckily for me, my CO has had dealings with AB in the past so he made sure that I did everything to the letter and in all my reports every "T" was crossed and dotted every "I."

Endings
My cover had been fully blown which then killed my career as a spook. Once it's blown, there really isn't much you can do to salvage it. A full investigation began and I asked permission to get out of the military and from AA's service. It was granted. At the end of the investigation (which concluded I don't know when) they learned that Black was still alive and operating which exhonorated me and proved that I had done nothing wrong and that there was nothing that I could have done to prevent the events which had transpired. As to what happened to Black I don't know. As for Eagle, he pulled through and is still working for AB. I keep in touch with him time to time and we became good friends after the incident.

Sadly enough, this was probably the most interesting of events I had happen to me while in the military. I've had a few instances where I have been chased, but nowhere near to this extent. Since I usually didn't carry a firearm, I generally didn't see much combat. When there was action going on around me, i just did what the locals did, layed low and pray I don't get shot.
