VQ vs BUICK! vs Bimmer

Although its quite cold and mildly wet up here, I had a chance to go against 2 pimped out rides. A nice blue 6spd 540 with some aftermarket exhausts, & a black on tint with some decent rims, buick regal GS(GTP engine) on the Hwy!

That grandpa car got my attention, but ultimately the bmw is the true driving machine, regardless, the bimmer was toying with me, and he would pull pretty steadily away.......

Nevertheless, the BUICK FLIES right near us, the Bimmer guy seemed pretty cocky about it. But let me tell you that Buick was the ultimate sleeper.... he TOYED with the 540, and bus lengthed him after few seconds!! Can you say 3.8 supercharged with bolt ons?

I came from a 3.1 pushrod, went up a level to DOHC, now I was thinking of going back to those cheap$$ & fast, easily modable, reliable ameican engines

So the Buick won??? Wasn't a race really, from a stop I feel that Bimmer would've killed that Buick, and if you are gonna mod a cheap american car, go with the 67 Nova and drop a 450 in it.

The 3800 is very easy to mod. There are numerous 3800s deep into the 12s. I can definitely see it pulling away from the 540 with just a few mods. The 540 probably shit his pants after he got walked.

well german cars r better on the hwy, he still lost... or r u refferin to RWD + manual = better for take offs?

nevertheless, those old muscle cars are too ghetto, i dont mind this more modern look as a side project

unless that bmw is awd he wouldn't stand a chance...even if its rwd, he might beat it out of the hole, but the L67 (supercharged 3800s) have massive low end torque(I'm talking 300+ EASY at the wheels)...FWD or not he would of caught and passed it easily, these cars make most power down low.

Great race!

I'd gladly have a 540 stock over a modified Buick, yuck, I hate American cars.

My dad has the N/A Regal, and it's quick for it's weight, but it's way too heavy. My friend has a Bonniville and it's even worse.

Aren't the first and 2nd gens able to almost keep up with the Bonniville?

they should beat a stock N/A Bonneville...in fact I think I read a post about it here recently
stock Grand prix GTs (NA)/Imapala LS (NA) run around 15.9-16.4 I believe so stock vs stock these might be a bit faster....but thats not saying much, they're still slow

Do you know what these 3.8supercharged engines usually dyno STOCK? I heard they're under rated?

Also, say if I wanted to build a reliable low mid 13s@105mph trap, GTP/Regal in the spring, what mods and cost would you think is needed, with an "average 60ft.."?

Here's a clip of a 13sec GTP vs a max from the 5page dispute over at maxima.org

In na form it is great too....Reliability, Durability, Exceptional mpg, Good TQ and power mated to a far superior transmission than our VQ's in Auto form

they don't dyno too impressively stock...190-200whp for the older ones, but a pulley/intake changes that I think
I found this for the 04 CompG and am surprised (advertised as 260hp/280tq)

says its stock

thing with these cars is that they're not all created equal...martin luther king didn't make the assembly lines... Some can run high 13s with just a size smaller pulley, intake and a decent 60', but some need more( to kill the KR mainly so you get most power). Some need $200 to get into 13s, some $800. Just don't expect to be blown away by the interior lol....it sucks (dont know about regals, should be a better though)
New bolt on Turbo kits make these cars as effective as the old GNs...minus RWD
If you can do engine work yourself then just get a cam (and whatever's needed to run it), home made intake, smaller pulley, port your own manifolds and you should be mid 13s with a decent 60'
I went the other route, got rockers intead of cam...you can stil use these once you go turbo (which I plan on doing eventually).
Just don't expect any great resale value...these cars have none.
