Yes, its true! Came across a brand new maxima today. Car didnt even have plates on it yet.
We both were in the same parking lot and left at the same time. We just cruised together for a lil bit, before we hit the highway. I never talked to the guy, but he had a passenger and so did I. Now they are rated at 20hp more stock than I am, so I expected with my mods (VERY FEW) should be relatively close. we both get on the highway and Im in front. I accelerate quickly to 70+ getting on the on ramp, and the Max is right with me. there was a lil bit of traffic, so he trailed me till we had an open stretch. Once I saw he had room I slowed down to about 65, and he got next to me. I had my window cracked a bit so he saw me look over at him and give the lil head knod. He gave it back so I rolled the window up, and dropped to 3rd. You can hear my engine screaming at close to 5K rpms, and I hit it first. I didnt go WOT right away, but enough to let him know to step on it...and he did! When I shift to 4th, we are neck n neck. I stopped looking at the speedo, and just watched the road and glance at the tac and when i was in 4th, he was barely edging me out. Got into fifth gear and we are side by side again. from my 5th gear up, no one lost any ground or gained any. After this, Im afraid to see what a MT Max will do, cause im pretty sure his car was an AT

Damn looks like we can't sleep on the Maxi's anymore! Cool, looks like this 4th GEN VQ's got alot of tuning room since thats the same VQ in the Altima's minus timing on the exhaust cam and the 10.6:1 compression both which are on the VQ35HR's.
Don't know what it is but I've always had this feeling that even at fuel cut-off the motor in my car still wasn't being pushed all the way.

I've reached my speed limiter in 5th gear at barely over 5K rpms at 155mph, and the car felt like it wants to keep going, but the computer stopped it.

thats how the computer limits your speed. It cuts fuel to the engine at a certain speed
our cars with electronic throttles don't cut the fuel , the ecu just partially closes the throttle plate . older cars with a throttle cable , the ecu had no choice but to cut fuel and ignition to limit speed , with our cars it involuntarily "takes your foot off the gas" and hold the car steady at the set speed limit .
What Too_Slow is saying is also true but when I said fuel cut-off I meant when the tach hits 6900 RPM's the fuel is cut and the tach bounces in whichever gear you're in.
Still doesn't feel the engine is being stressed too much at this level. Back on topic if a 3600lbs Torque converter operated Maxima is running alongside a slightly modded much lighter manual transmission Altima I suspect this motor is making around 300+BHP. Its probably cranking out the same as the Z's HR motor is.
290HP. There is no manual option, even in the SR. It's a CVT.
