I had a fun runs with my cousin over the weekend. He has a 07 Legacy Spec B with a SPT intake and a reflash for the intake. I don't think its aggressive, but still helps nevertheless.
I had my street tires on which made the dig races pretty difficult.
First two races were from a dig. We line it up in a industrial area where its 3 lanes worth of roads and clear. It was later at night so having a little fun wasn't going to be too dangerious.
We did the good old three honks off the line and we were off. He launched it pretty hard and I had to launch it like any FWD that makes a lot of torque.
So end of 1st gear came and he had a car length on me. I shifted into 2nd and MORE wheel spin (getting sick of this wheel spin lol). He got another half car length on me.
I shift into 3rd gear and he no longer can pull away and I started to reel him in. End of 3rd gear I was only a half a car behind. I shift into 4th gear and it was bye bye for the Spec B.
The second dig race I royally fuked up the launch and I didn't bother to punch it behind 2nd gear because he had like 2.5 car lengths on me lol.
The problem now is that the weather is getting colder and traction is getting tougher. So our other race was from a 40 mph roll on. I was in 2nd gear and my cousin did the three honks and we were roaring. Yet again I started to break loose in 2nd (Not heavily, but that annoying screaching you get when your right on the limit of traction).
He got a half a car jump on me. I slam it in 3rd gear and here I came again reeling him in. While the RPMS were climbing (5500,6000, 6500, 6700) I just started to pull by him at this point. I shift into 4th gear and my lead was getting larger and larger.
I noticed he a lot quicker with this stage 1 reflash with the SPT. I would just instantly smoke him from a roll, but now he gets a little jump ahead everytime. I think he is making some good torque now.
Next thing he is going to get is the STi catback exhaust (For the Legacy SPEC B) from japan where they actually made such a thing.
The Y-pipe really opened up my top end now and mid-range torque. I never peeled in 2nd from a roll on before.

The stock exhaust is not restrictive up to 300whp. We have an LGT that ran 12s to the track on the stock turboback. How's that for factory over-engineering, lol. Same goes for the stock intake, there's some running over 350whp on the stock box. As far as I'm concerned I ain't touch either until I get to over 300whp.
Good runs. JKG, can you find out what reflash he has for the intake? I am not familiar with any existing, unless he got a custom tune. I think he has a Stage 1 reflash which, if it is an off the shelf map like Cobb, is NOT tuned for the intake and he may actually be running lean. Personally I think he's wasting his money on the STi exhaust, there's cheaper ones out there but to each his own. Do you know if he posts on Legacygt.com? Can you find out his username?

As for the tune I have to ask and not sure if he posts on Legacygt.com, I could definitely find out. Now for the STi exhaust, he doesn't care how much it costs, hes all about genuine STi parts. When he had his STi, he only bought STi parts either on ebay or from Japan.
When he didn't have a tune, he told me he as getting horrible gas mileage. Not sure why that was happening. Now with this tune, he said everything is back to normal but with more punch.
He is probably running the Cobb AP with an OTS map. E-tune will be the best 150USD he'll spend at this point. Tell him to get his ass over legacygt.com and start reading up.
Again, good runs.

What kind of power do you think my cousins car is making with the mods? I noticed he always gets the jump on me even from a roll, but once the RPM start to climb in the higher gears, I pull away.
Lets say he is running an aggressive tune for his mods. He does run 94 octane.
Hard to say, Cobb's Stage 1 maps are right around +16% HP and +22% torque. Based on the race outcome I would say he is putting out more torque and less horsepower, which is typical of the stock turbo. He has you on low-end torque but loses up top. If I had to guess I'd estimate at somewhere around 230whp and around 240wtq?
Look at the dyno graphs here just for a ballpark CobbTuning.com - 05-06 AccessPORT
Notice how power starts dropping sharply in the higher revs. Then again that depends on the tune. He gets the jump on you with torque and starts losing due to less HP.
He can only push it so much on the stock exhaust, even with 94 octane. IF he is running an aggressive e-tune, I'd say he's pushing around 15PSI compared to the stock 13. My experience with Cobb's Stage 1 was a noticeable gain in mid-range and a bit up top. Stage 2 however is night and day. I was able to outpull an SE-R with an intake and y-pipes+cans from a ~35mph roll from what I remember, but ever so slightly.
As a side note, I've read some bad experiences related to the STP CAI. The relocation of the MAF does some weird things. Some tuners dislike it because they've run into moody ones that were a bitch to tune for. Personally I'd have gone for a Cobb, Perrin or AVO intake, but that's just me. I don't understand his whole approach of staying OEM. There are better aftermarkets out there for cheaper.
If he truly wants to stay OEM, what's he gonna do IF he goes Stage 2 and he's gonna start blowing his endtanks on the stock TMIC? The only two big companies out there that make top mounts are AVO and Perrin, so he won't have any choice LOL

How hard did you pull on him? Sorry, but I forget what you dynoed recently, wasn't it close to 250whp? That would give us an idea of what he could be at.
In all honesty I don't know how much of a chance the stock VF40 or VF46 has on the highway against a well-breathing VQ Altima. North of 80 or so they just start pushing hot air. A 15PSI actuator and a good tune helps, but you can only do so much with such a small turbo. Sure spools up quick though, I was giving a buddy of mine a ride and he was watching boost, 2nd or 3rd gear from a roll it would go from vacuum to full boost in literally 500rpms or so. Runs hard on the street and makes the car feel like a torquey V8, but sucks on the interstate. I was gonna upgrade to the new OEM WRX VF52 turbo but changed my mind. AVO380 is such a better turbo and it's one thing to have a turbo to it's limit or have one just barely breaking a sweat. They call it the 380 because supposebly it puts you to 380hp at the crank and you'd be at or over 300whp. Spools only 800rpms slower than the stocker.
I'm rambling again ...

Later edit: sorry, I have sigs disabled, so ...
He's probably putting down 215-220whp/235wtq on the same Dynapack you ran. That would be my guess.
Hey Fishbone,
The 242 WHP was before the Y-pipe upgrade which does add a significant amount of Hp and torque. Taz got it dynoed and it made 13 WHP and 14 WTQ over stock. Obivously every dyno is different, but it still gives you a good idea how much power it gave me.
Why not get the VF39? Isn't the STi turbo larger than the VF52's?
VF39 is larger than stock but equivalent to a VF52, plus it's not a direct bolt-on, so I would need to do an STi swap (manifold, intercooler, etc). AVO 380 is a bigger turbo and is a direct bolt on. So is the VF52.

I thought so. Then he's probably at your old numbers in reverse (swap hp with tq) lol. If I were you I would have done a run with no mufflers just to see how restrictive they really are.
I'm assuming they are just about as restrictive as any OEM muffler. The VQ isn't exactly a roaring lion but you can't hear the engine at all from the mufflers, only the hood.
Oh wait, I just remembered you've got Magnaflow's right JKG?
I have two Magnaflow mufflers (street verison) on the stock piping. I didn't want a loud car lol. So far you can barely hear them and cruise, but when you open it up, they sound good with a slightly more throaty sound with no drone.
I do have the stock catback piping which is a restriction. It crimps to 2 inches if not smaller before the pipes split into two.
In 4th gear I pulled on him pretty quickly. Maybe lets say your walking with a fast pace and I jog past you. Something like that lol.

Do those mufflers fit the 3rd gen? If so, can you give me a link to the ones you have? I've been looking for mufflers like that
