I got a 91 240 with an SR20DET but I need more power, can I just upgrade the turbo or do I need a whole new turbo kit??? Cuz if I need a whole new Turbo kit I would have just stayed with a KA.... Please Help
i would just upgrade the cams and then do the turbo. it will be more cost effective and nobody really makes a turbo kit for the sr. just upgrade kits. i would just get a s15 turbo if you don't feel like doin the cams and what not. its always best to beef the cams when you start pushin more air. so be liek me buy the best cams you can and buy a gt2871r turbo and then redo the springs and retainers. and you will be making like mad power like 350-380hp. just be sure you have everything else you need to support that power.
I still have my KA, and I've seen a turbo setup for the KA that matches the SR20 for less than half the cost. I really want a setup that will pass smog or that I can atleast tone down to pass smog. Who sells good pistons rings and rods for a KA that can handle heat and compression. I saw some Arias kits that look decent. The setup I wanna run is a mix of NOS and juice from the turbo. Which NOS system would be ideal? More and more it seems like I made a mistake by getting an SR20, Im just gonna sell it. What can I do to bring out as much power as I can without worrying about smog. Whatever Bolt ons I put on can be taken right off and the oem parts put back on but will an engine rebuild with higher compession heat treated rods rings and pistons affect smog? will high performance cams for a KA be ok too?
Oh and thank you for all your advice... I just wanna do it right the first time and the more money I save on the engine the more money I have to spend on the rest of the car. Im just gonna stick with the KA, but now I have all these new questions for my dream setup and if I can get it to work. Hey, would it help to try and get my car sponsored, and how would I do that?
you can put that sr in there, they burn alot cleaner than the ka's do. i have mine on a straight pipe with no cat and i passed smog, so. and what kit are you talking about because the cheapest one i found is a greddy kit and it was like 3400 for everything. i would just go sr and just rebuild the head. its alot more reliable and can handle 400hp on stock internals. and sponsorships are great but the ones that you see online like scp and carsponsorships.com are a waste of time and money, its more like you get into a discount club for 88 dollars. they are not full on sponsorships. i have a clothing sponsor and a tire sponsor but other than that the best way to get sponsored is start racing or drifting that car as much as you can at local show offs and events and try to get alot of it on film and then find a shop to sponsor you. i have a partial shop sponsorship and they cut my shop fee's to like nothing and i get free dyno, and tuning. but the best way to get sponsored is to find small businesses that have like no advertising that can kind of relate to your sport and go talk to their store manager or owner. alot of the francise stores won't be able due to they are apart of a big corp, but small tire shops and small tuner shops will if you are good enough. and sponsors are not always the best thing, yeah they might give you money but when all you here from them is you need to step up your game it kind of gets annoying. i can not count the number of times i have been on the phone with my agent or a manager and all he does is tell me that last night was shit or last month you sucked real bad. it kind of drags you down some times but when you start getting checks from them it pays off. and if you are thinking that you are going to get sponsored by some big name company like greddy or hks, your not, they rarely step out into the local and street scene for sponsorships. i might have a deal working out with origin because i showed their North American representative up at nopi and i totally stuck all the same lines as him and he was very impressed with my performance. but that is the key, get good at what you want to do, start winning races, get your name out there, and then try for sponsorships. most places are not going to just back some kid that walked in off the street and has a 240 with a turbo and say here you wanna drive for us, you have to prove yourself. and thats what this sport is all about. and if you plan on drifting that 240 i would say use that sr and don't even worry about the nos, besides there is more money in drifting right now than their is in show. so in my opinion forget the show car BS, build that car and drift it and show it off sideways like i do. i have a career in this almost, and if i keep progressing liek i am i will hopefully be able to do this full time. learn from the best, roll with the best, i learned how to drift from andy sapp, <crazy crazy man. god that was a great week end.
keep it sideways and smokin.

nice post dude.....but i had a question....do you think the 240sx is worth building up??? how much money did you throw into the car to get it the way you did???? i have a 89 hatch 240sx and right now im thinkin should i just make it look good for show or drift and build up horsepower. im also thinking should i just get a paint job and a body kit and leave it like that then when i get money get something like an evo and race that......i love my 240sx but i dont wanna end up putting 10000 into it cause i wont sell it for that much....then ill be thinkin i could have put that 10000 down on a 350z or the new skylines that are comin out.

i have about 19k wrapped up in mine but i have had alot of custom work done that not many people outside of my friends know about, i've had a ton of fab done now as well , as well as a full chromed valvecover and black chrome i.c piping. if you are starting out with a stock 240 and you are wanting to make the most out of it for cheap build it for drift. you don't need alot of power for drift and if you are not wanting to drop 10k, then definatly build it for drift. i have guys that have have bone stock 240's with a few power mods and the rest they put into susspension. but really even that is a lil over done for drft. if you are a rookie at drifting and have never done it in your life, just buy a a set of coilovers, and a 1, 1.5, 2 lsd or vlsd. the vlsd is gonna be a lil bit harder to get loose in the initial drift. but it is a lot cheaper that a kaaz lsd. i just put in a 2 way i think and now have custom made axles that a buddy made for me at work. these things are bad too, they are solid billet aluminum and can hand 4 times the power than what my car produces. the problem with building a show car is that you will spend twice as much putting useless crap on the car that does almost nothing but just look cool. besides any idiot can park a car and try and make it look cool, it takes some real talent and skill to kick it sideways at 70+ mph. oh by the way guys i will have the video up soon of my last event/show off, i have some sick footage that you guys are going to love that involves a cone and that wing that u all hate, and me scaring the crap out of the crowd. so i n my opinion build the car for drift, buy a good intake and exhaust set up then invest in some good coilovers i suggest megan racing track coilovers, a good clutch, and some strut bars to get you started. and the body just leave it, after you put the coilovers on that car will sit lower than snake shit, like mine. all a body kit is going to do is cost you countless zip ties everytime you hit a cone or pot hole, that is if you put it on with zip ties. trust me it saves you but later, looks tacky but saves you hundreds. the only body mod i would do would be a good set of rims, and may be a new bumper on the front but don't go after market, go jdm or something. so yeah till next time
keep it lock and full smokin, sideways always
i got 10k into mine(thats total, not just the motor. includes suspension, brakes, clutch, radiator etc..), and i own evo's, Z's, vettes, cars that cost 3-4x's what i put into my car, you will NEVER get your money's worth out of a modded car, ever...(unless its rhd or really rare ex. MR2, supra...)
you might have 10k to put as a down payment on a Z or an Evo, but do you make enough money to make the payments + insurance and still get mods to make the car actually move, i raced a guy in a brand new Z last night and actually felt bad for him the 3rd time we raced and let him pull to within a carlength of me. i let him get the jump everytime and when i stepped on it it was like he wasnt moving...

ok just got my final settlement from the accident i was in 4 years ago, i just got 20,000 and i am debating on what i am going to do with it, since i just finished the 240, i'm thinkin about goin in a different direction, well different side of the pond really, i have been talking to my local shop that is also a licensed importer in jdm vehicals, i have been thinking alot about having something imported, something liek a type x or maybe and actual s15, becaue both of these could be streetable, i mean the s15 chassis is almost exactly the same as the s13 and s14 and the type x is the s13 so its identical to the early model 240's. adn then again i have also thought about buying something totally different adn rare here in the us and getting a mitsu. FTO. i don't know if any of you have seen these but they look incredible and move like stink, they kind of look like a porche and a ferrari had a baby and they gave it to mitsubishi and named it FTO. i dunno, maybe i will just buy an s14 and build that out but i kind of have my heart set on an s15 type s, and just building that into a drift/ street car that will be my weekend warrior, something that i can take out and just rip people apart with. i dunno let me know what you guys think, i love being accident prone, it pays really well.
you CANT go wrong with an s15, fast...drift...sexy.
but if i had the money to get an imported car, it would be this...
one of the meanest cars you will ever run into, light, gobs of power, awd and unique...god i loves the pulsar.
Im 18 and i just bought a 93 240sx coupe 5spd i want a drift car but idk wut to do first its all stock color red 120,000 miles wut do i do to it in order from now to done i need prices too ill be able to put about 300-500 a week in it so feed that in too thanx ill wait for a reply from someone oh i made my name for the future dont mind it thanx pce
btw, the VR4 mix + the FD don't look right at all... and ionno where you'll be able to find a FTO, oh, and to make a legit S15 US legal is a fun process. Buying one is around $35,000 roughly, and to make it legal in the US is another 10,000? i forget the prices for conversions and whatnot.
And apparently missouri has some crazy touge because ionno where you go drifting....

Good advice, but you don't need to upgrade springs and retainers for that power level. That can be easily achieved on a stock valvetrain using Jim Wolf S3 or S4 cams with a 2871r.

Yea pfft. Cheaper vs Reliability on that one. I'd like to see you driving a stock internal KA daily at 12 pounds and seeing how long it will last on a crap tune. Dare I say weeks?!

What the heck are you talking about. NOS and Boost? Just get a gt28rs/2871r and crank the boost. 310+ rwhp without even talking the valve cover off. Swap different cams ( like JWT S3's) and you're in the 350-370 whp range...which will net you faster drag times than a new Z06 vette

Please read my sticky on top of the page! It seems as if you've done ZERO homework with your car!

Do it right at get the SR! Again read the stickies please! If you've ever ridden in a 240 with a 300 whp SR you'd be in love.
And don't even bother with getting sponsered. At this point in the game you can forget about that! Get your car done and then worry about sponsers.

IF you don't know this by now, I'll just reenforce the point: Putting money into a car is as good as throwing it away. The time/energy into modified parts are not going to 'gotten' back...ever (well there are some rare cases, but you catch what I'm saying)
10,000 into an s13 could make for a street KILLER. You could ahve a built SR (or KA) and easily be making 400+ whp with that...if not more! Hell for 2500/3000 into your 240 you can easily smoke EVO/350z's!
Also: Leave your car with stock aero if you're planning on leaving the engine stock. You'll get super silly looks with a bigass drift styled kit witha puny ka24E under the hood.
And brother, not being rude, but 10,000 on a new Skyline? They're gonna want more than that! You're looking at a car with a z06 vette pricetag or higher!

Just be concerned first buddy on driving the car, gand getting it in ideal running shape. Do a good tuneup, throw some suspension parts on there, and then look into the engine. A properly setup suspension car with a KA is mighty fun to beat around!
And if you want to drift, get some old shitbox and just throw a diff in it.

Werd to this! I actually told a good pal of mine just last night to look into getting one of these cars. HE wanted rare/unique/fast. I reminded him that he'd NEVER see another one on the road (well he could, there are some in NYC), he'd have AWD, he'd have a turbo engine, and he'd be workin EVO's in stock form!
I too would love a GTiR pulsar...
