No major updates.

I got one shroud cut down to size. I had to take a lot off the top and notch the bottom for the solenoid. The other shroud I cut to much off of one side and you can see the FX-R clear as day. So I called Matt today and ordered another shroud.

I also came to the conclusion the the 90mm rings just will not fit no matter how hard I try. So I ordered some 70mm rings and I'll be selling the 90's.

Other than that I just need to pick up some misc hardware to finalize the mounting and aim, cut the other Matchbox shroud, paint, and mount everything. Then I'll be done and on to the next project.

Nope. I was planning on running both pairs of halo's as parking lights and use my cornering lights as turn signals.

Boo!

Turns out the 70mm rings are backordered. So I had TRS ship the single shroud now and the rings when they get them in. Hopefully that shroud is here tomorrow so I can cut it and start painting it.

Tonight I sprayed the Micro Gatling and the Iris shrouds that I already cut with a couple coats of primer and so far a single coat of semi-gloss black. I'm going to mask off the black ring on the Iris and the inner part of the Micro Gatling and then color match the rest of the shroud on each. Then the xB rings will be siliconed in place. Before I mount them though I want to finalize the aim of both FX-R's on the car one last time since I've fiddled with them a bit since the last time I mocked them up.

TRS also launched their new revamped site this week and it looks absolutely beautiful. They also posted a Fall Garage Sale. So anyone looking for some HID components, take a look.

TRS Fall 2012 Garage Sale!!!!!

I'm thinking of picking up a spare pair of D2S bulbs as well as the 3Five SS Amp ballasts.

I know I've said I hope to finish this in a few days a bunch of times now. But this time it's legit. Hopefully I can get the first pair of shrouds fully painted tomorrow as well as cut the other pair. Then paint the other pair on Friday, mock everything up on Sunday, assemble and let them dry overnight, and then install them on Monday.

*fingers crossed*

Beginning to wrap things up finally. I called TRS this morning and had a nice long discussion with Andrew about this setup, the TRS Garage Sale, and a presentation I'm doing for my EN101 class. I ended up having Andrew create an invoice for a pair of 3Five SS AMP ballasts, a pair of 4.3k D2S bulbs, and the cheapest projector TRS has, (more on that in a bit).

When I got home this afternoon I had a surprise from TRS on my front step, my "new" Iris shroud. So I got to work right away. I prepped my already cut Iris and Micro Gatling's for paint and laid down the first coat of primer. While that was drying I mocked up my quad housings and re-aimed the FX-R's and aligned the rotation on the Matchboxes. I couldn't test all 4 at the same time since I would've had to re-run the 9006 harness, swap splitters around, and basically put more work then I wanted to into it right then.

Next I hit the already cut shrouds with one more coat of primer, 3 coats of color, and now 2 coats of clear. I also sprayed the reflector bowl that I had previously scrapped with 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of semi-gloss black. The reason why I now need the halogen bowl is to hide the "L" brackets that I used to mount the FX-R's. I sprayed them the same semi-gloss I used on the interior of the housings to help hide it.

Pics of the dremeled reflector bowl, Iris, and Micro-Gatling.

Reflector Bowl.

Iris.

What's left of the Micro Gatling.

In order to get the Micro Gatling to clear I not only had to cut out just about the entire "outer shell" but I also had to cut down the tabs that the lens clip sits on to get it to sit farther back on the Matchbox. The Iris was just a matter of shaving the top down like I did on the E46-R's. Lastly the reflector bowl was a lot of cutting and sanding to make sure I had enough clearance between the Iris and bowl. Tentatively tonight I'll be able to get the drivers side almost fully assembled. Minus the 70mm xB rings of course.

Speaking of the xB rings. I asked Andrew if the new ones coming in would be the V1's or V2's since TRS has been talking about the V2's more and more lately. It turns out the new rings will be the V2's. Now that's a good and bad thing. V2 upgrades, (Plasma SMD Halo Ring? WTH is this - Page 4, Plasma SMD Halo Ring? WTH is this - Page 5). So what this means is I either need to order new 60mm amber rings when they come in or live with having 2 different brightness LED rings. It also turns out that mid-generation of the V1 rings TRS switched over to the male pins on the connectors. So any xB rings ordered in the future will come with male 9006 pins.

Back to the cheap projector now. For my final project in my EN101 class we need to do an informative presentation about any topic of our choosing. I am planning on doing HID lighting and its evolution over the past 20 years. To help explain this I will be bringing in my portable power supply as well as a ballast, 4300 D2S bulb, and projector.

Got the drivers side 90% done. Just waiting on the other xB ring which according to Andrew@TRS should ship out Monday or Tuesday next week. I'm hoping to have it before Thanksgiving so I can silicone it and the Iris in place and let it sit and cure for a couple days to prevent any gassing issues. I'm using silicone instead of JB Kwik because it's clear. So any excess that I may have anywhere will be harder to see.

Obligatory pics.

The 60mm xB ring is not mounted in these pics.

And 60mm xB ring mounted and lit. The Matchbox is lit with a 6000k bulb.

For the next hour or so I'm gonna leave the Matchbox on in an effort to quicken the curing time of the Loctite silicone I used. The Matchbox lens is clear. It's just dusty from being out in the open and from being near where I've been dremeling.

Well, it looks like the xB rings I've been waiting on came in and got shipped out Friday. Hopefully that means I'll have everything by Tuesday at the latest. Which means I'll definitely have this wrapped up by the end of the week. Pending any major issues or setbacks.

Doh!

I spoke to soon about the xB rings. I called TRS today to inquire about the shipped status of that package and it looks like the order has been put together minus the rings and a tracking number generated for it. But they are still waiting on the xB rings which now look like they'll be there on Wednesday. So much for finishing this this week.

Perhaps I spoke to soon. TRS called me today to tell me that the 4.3k bulbs I ordered in the GS were not put aside and that they were out of them. So I'll be getting 5k's instead. They also told me the LED rings came in today and everything would be shipping out today. Hopefully this means everything comes in Friday/Saturday.

Just about done here. Received my 70mm amber rings on Friday. These are the new v 2.0 ones which I talked about earlier. They are indeed brighter in person than the v 1.0's but not so over the top that I feel I need to replace the 60mm's for v 2.0's as well. I probably could've gotten away with the 80mm's but I wanted to play it safe. The 70mm's are a perfect fit over the front of the FX-R.

I also received my new GS 3Five SS AMP ballast's that I just couldn't pass up on. As advertised they have a couple small scratches and scuff's which I personally could care less about since they will be hidden. Hopefully this way both my CBI's and xB35's will warm up at the same rate.

Finished retro minus the housing bezel and lens.

Tomorrow morning I'll swap over the lenses/bezel's and re-wire everything. All I have left to do tonight is to tidy up the LED ring harnesses to make them less cumbersome to work with and to handle the housing.

Lastly, I also received the cheap bi-xenon projector from TRS. They sent me an IS250 which uses a side mount for the bulb instead of a rear mount and lemme tell you, the output is god awful. The output is streaky, the hotspot not well defined, and just overall very very unpleasant to look at.

Done!

I've gotta double check the aim tonight but it looks to be pretty close right now.

Drivers side head on.

Full front with xB rings on for parking lights.

Full front with xB rings, FX-R's, and Matchboxes on.

Final setup list is. . .
-FX-R 3.0 w/ Osram CBI and Iris shroud
-Matchbox w/ xB35 5000k and Micro Gatling shroud
-60mm v1.0 xB rings
-70mm v2.0 xB rings
