08 3.5 Engine Knocking at cold start-up

I have read the posts for engine knocks but mine is a little diff. At cold s-up, knocks for 1-2 secs then ok. Hadn't noticed before but engine revs > 2k for a min or so even when weather is warm. I know it is supposed to rev higher when cold but could cause excessive wear if too high? Sounds suspiciously like a rod. Maybe a valve, but awfully loud. Using Mobile1 Syn 5w30. 112k

TIA

Rod or big-end bearing. Try a oil change with (cheap) straight 40 oil. Does that make a significant difference in cold start noise? If so then bearing issue and you are now driving a ticking time bomb...you don't want to throw a rod at speed.

I prefer not to throw one at all. Thanks man, I knew you would reply. You are such a help in here

Tony

Oh, and I noticed you have a Stillen sway bar. Did it help a bunch with body roll?

NM, duh. I read your post.

Are you talking knock, or rattle. A lot of VQs have an issue with the timing chain rattle for a second or 2 at start up. I believe that issue is a tension er.. or something.....My 02 started to do this on occasion at under 30K

Doesn't that engine have variable valve timing or similar. If so it'll likely have little oil passages that 40W would starve, so I wouldn't recommend using any oil thicker than recommended.

That said, my 2006 with >280k miles rattled for a handful of seconds when started after the oil had drained to the pan. Rattled more so if oil was low (it burned oil).

Not sure how loud your noises are but mine was easily heard from inside the cabin with windows rolled up yet not loud enough to say "what the hell?!".

40W oil should not affect VCT timing devices at ALL. I have run it for 20 years in my Fords, everybody said it would mess the VCT up. Nope, not even a bit. STRAIGHT 40W on top of that.

Heavy oil messing up parts (dry starts) is a myth brought on by the oil companies to get you to fall for lower vis oils that cost more. They are for mileage ONLY.

I have been proving that for some 35 years now. Running 15W-40 in my Nissans now. No trouble.

Sorry guys. I didn't see these replies. It may be a rattle I hope. Would prefer to replace timing chain. Or tensioner. Think I'll call dealer on cost of replacing chain. I've heard different opinions on replacing timing chain some say every 120k some say not at all.

Thanks guys.

I'm guessing that the Nissan dealer will give you an estimate of at least $1,000.00 for timing chain replacement, and related parts.

Me? I would drive the car and not worry about it. The timing chain tensioner is oil pressure activated, meaning it takes oil pressure to take the slack out of the timing chain.

It's been doin that for a while now, over a year. I hope it's just the chain, but in my experience with cars it sounds like a rod. Has that metallic sound. Just happens for a second. But if I pull away cold under load like uphill, I can hear a faint sound. Thanks guys for the help. I'm gonna just drive it. I will try the 40w and see if that quietens it any.

If talking about to the right in current threads it likely means you have just already read that one today.

If you know anything about rod knock you'll know they don't knock for a year. Timing parts likely.

Thanks. That was the check I was talking about.

Again, it only knocks at cold start, almost immediately quietens . Never really had a rod bearing or any bearing do that. And it's maybe faster than a rod noise would be. But that's the way it sounds. But it could be a rattle that sounds that way. I hope it is timing parts. I've been confuzzled over it. That's why I posted. I had a '65 Mushorse that knocked for as long as I had it (several years). I expected it to throw at any time, but it held on. Someone totaled it for me LOL.

Thanks again.
