2009 Altima SL - Nav DVD reader won't read the disk

My navigation system is telling me that I don't have a nav DVD inserted when I do. I've tried two different DVDs and get the same results regardless. The DVD reader continually gives off mechanical clicking noises until I eject the disc. I tried a commercial DVD player cleaner which is nothing more than a disc with a tiny brush glued to it but that didn't help. I also disconnected the battery for several minutes after reading somewhere that that would force the system to cold boot the entire nav/entertainment system. It made no difference, either. Anybody run into this before? I rarely use the nav system for anything other than a convenient map display. For actual navigation, I use Waze on my iPhone. Still, I'd like to get it working again if possible and if I can do so without spending a lot of money.

Common problem in all optical drives when the laser fails or the pickup lense achieves a level of dust which prevents the focusing algo from doing so (excessive scatter). I once replaced the optical pickup unit on a TEAC home entertainment unit...this took a crap ton of research to figure out which part would fit, then I ordered 3 Chinesium parts...and found one that actually worked. I do not recommend this approach...and I will not do it again either.

In short, get a used working unit and swap 'em out. Pretty easy to access the nav unit...see my BOSE thread below for Gen4 radio removal ideas. I used to have pics but the forum seems to have lost them all.
