idling rough

I have a 2011 nissan altima and its been idling rough for a little while now. It has gotten worse lately. It does when i am sitting at stop lights or drive thrus. When i put the car in park it stops. What could be wrong with it?

It is most likely worn/damages spark plug(s) and or coil is going bad. Could also be am intake manifold leak...a leak at the TB, etc. Did you check for codes yet?

Double check it. Even a small leak can drive things crazy. The plugs still should be pulled and inspected. The PVC valve should be removed and checked to ensure it is moving freely and not clogged....

If it was a bad coil or intake shouldn't it do it all the time though?

Not necessarily because with the coils the resistence changes with the load of the engine.

Coil should mostly be temp related though by no means isolated from the rest of the systems. Intake vacuum leak should be worst under load/no throttle, so putting it in park might make the difference between struggling and not.

EDIT: coils are just spools of copper wire, whose resistance changes with temperature, not vacuum. bEcause the length of wire is quite long in the spool, the effect is multiplied over what we normally see (extension cords, etc.)
