Hey guys...

new problem today.

I normally let the engine fully warm up before driving, especially in cold weather.

Yesterday, it was cold, and I was in a hurry. I only let the car idle for just 1 minute. The tranny was in Park, and the idle speed was normal.
But when I put the car's autotranny in Reverse, immediately the engine raced to very high RPM...so high that I had to stomp hard on the brakes to keep the car from leaping backwards and hitting people. (Wow I could've killed someone). I was smart enough to react and avoid a fatal disaster.
  • I then put the car in Neutral, and the engine idle speed was back to normal.
  • I then put the car in Drive, and the engine idle speed was still normal.
  • Then I put it in Reverse again, and immediately got the crazy high racing idle again.
  • I then put the car in Park, and the engine idle speed was back to normal.

After the engine is fully warmed (like after 5 minutes of idling), there is no more problem even during Reverse.
So, this problem seem to occur only when the engine is cold and in Reverse.

What's going on? The engine is still running great.

How can a transmission lever affect causing high RPM idle?
