Heat degrades the transmission fluid which if not changed frequently enough will cause greater than normal wear. The paper filter in the transaxle is tiny and not equipped to filter out an excessive amount of wear debris. If this debris circulates in the CVT, the solenoids and valves will not operate as designed leading to driveability issues and potential failure.

I had to have my CVT replaced as well.

The Car: I've got a 2013 Altima 2.5SL that was purchased new in September of 2013. This car has been very well maintained by a local Nissan dealer with all oil changes performed prior to the suggested intervals. The CVT was serviced at 60k, and the transmission failed last week at 89,000 miles. This car has been babied its whole life, and my mpg since owning it is 32, as tracked on Fuelly.com.

Symptoms: The transmission started slipping without any warning. RPMs would fluctuate up and down under load and at constant speeds. There was no warning light, but a code P17F0 (transmission judder) was stored in the computer. The TSB for this is ridiculous in that the flow chart only goes from, "Was this code found?" straight to "Replace CVT"!

The Cost: Here is a breakdown of cost in order to inform the next owner who has to deal with this issue. The remanufactured CVT was $1803, and the total for installation was $2085. There are lots of small components such as nuts, bolts, exhaust gaskets, and transmission fluid that add up to another $330. Once replaced, a four-wheel alignment was performed for $130. Total cost with 6.25% sales tax on parts, minus a 20% off service coupon online, came to $3,780.

My Opinion: This is my third Nissan and it will be my last. I have really liked the car since I bought it, but I just don't trust the company any more. It would be very hard to find another 2013 that has been cared for like mine has, so to have a major component fail at 89k is just sad. Researching this issue, there are problems with a lot of Nissan CVTs installed in different model lines. My next car will be a Honda or Mazda.

Yup. I knew something was up the first day it started slipping, but I wonder if there was a pending code that could have been stored before the symptoms were apparent. My advice to anyone approaching the end of the 84k is to have the codes checked even if the CVT seems to be operating correctly. It could save you $4k.

No issues with my wifes 2018 rogue thus far. I just bought a 2021 altima and the new dealer will extend my cvt warranty to 120k if I have them service it every 30k. Kind of speaks to the value of clean fluid. My old dealer tech is what you could call a disgruntled employee so no reason to toe the company line. Said he’s seen no issues with the 2018’s and issues with prior years involved cars that have never been serviced. The cvts he swapped fluid on early weren’t coming back. My son in law is/was an extended oil change interval guy but is now dealing with the results of doing so in his 2103 f150 platinum eco boost. I’m a huge advocate of getting break in fluids out ASAP and then swapping them often. Plus it give me an excuse to be under my cars.

2013 with an in service date of 11/12. 66K miles. Car would just stop. Needed 2 tows from breakdown by driving and one additional one to get it to the dealer. Determination was to replace transmission after trying software upgrade etc. Dealer had the car for a month but mostly because they have been shorthanded. No real issues with the dealer. Cost $4,282.

Had called Nissan Consumer affairs at the start to register a case. Understandably was told that nothing could be done as the problem hadn't been diagnosed yet by the dealer. Called half way through as I wanted to be on record since it was taking so long. Was told no assistance would be given since we were out of warranty (on time not miles) even though dealer still hadn't made a final determination. Cited all the problems clearly documented everywhere and still nothing. Asked to escalate to someone higher and was told the agent was the final say. Would not budge or listen to reason.

Filed a claim with the class action law suit but am not expecting anything since we are beyond the warranty. Anyone have any other suggestions where they have had success?

Did you have the cvt ever serviced loubon? Just wondering. The manual is worthless when it comes to cvt service. I lost a cvt in my 09, luckily covered under extended warranty. The dealer told me at 60k that the degradation on consult was showing no fluid wear so no need. 35k later the tranny started whining. Never limp mode or shutdown. I’m going with 30k cvt service while under warranty and will do it myself after every 20.

No we did not. We also never received any notices etc. of any issues (regarding the extension of the warranty) but that could mean we were already out by the time they were sent. It looks to me that given the warranty extension period and the in service date that very few owners with in service dates around that time would have had a chance to have them checked out before they were out of warranty.

With an in service date of 11/12 it would have ended 11/19. So 16 months. Aside from the fact that the last year is basically irrelevant given little to no usage during Covid that would still be 4 months out. But the mileage is about 20K lower than the extension and I would think with a transmission the mileage is more critical than time.

To my earlier point, I'm not sure but I think the warranty was extended in 8/19 so that means anyone with an in service date of 8/12 or later on 2013 model car would be out of luck.

Dang that sucks. I’d have went to the salvage yard and had Nissan program it after the fact had it needed it. My cvt was replaced at 95k, approximately 38k later I found an engine that had 39k on it so swapped it so that when my son drives next yr he’ll have a low mileage drivetrain on a rust free 09. I’ve got cases of valvoline stocked up and do drain and fills quite often on the 09 and will do the same after the factory warranties are up on the 2018 and 21. My wife’s 07 Murano is still running around town with over 300k and full of red castrol fluid. My 09 was neglected due to a lazy dealer, I still believe had I have trusted my gut it never would have happened. Charging 2k in labor for an 8hr tranny swap is highway robbery.

In fact last time I checked at a salvage yard, low mileage cvts were available for my 2018 for under 1000. I’m planning ahead lol. ive never swapped a cvt but am quite sure I could do it in a weekend myself. Add in fluid and an alignment and thats still way less than half. I’d never use Nissan oem fluid unless I’m under warranty, if the stuffs so good why is it shot at 30k? Other fluids may be as well but they can be had for half what a dealer charges.

Jatco must have overlooked something when the CVT8 was first being produced in 2012. It took them a while to pinpoint the cause for the early failures and to this day they still haven't determine (or won't admit to) why some 2013 CVTs are still failing just outside of the extended warranty. Regular CVT fluid changes might not have prolonged the life of defective early units one of which loubon appears to have unfortunately. My 2014 2.5S (assembled August 2013) will have 100K miles on its original CVT on or about May 1 (knock on wood).

So does anyone know what the failure mode is on most all these transmissions? Did they say it was a pressure issue or what? Maybe inferior materials from some supplier (other country)?

One issue with the RE0F10D in the 2.5L engine is wear on the running surfaces of the belt links that eventually causes the belt to slip on the pulleys resulting in catastrophic belt failure or inability of the CVT to function.

Another is rotation of the pulleys on the shafts they move up and down on. The pulleys are only supposed to move up and down. This is not as much of an issue with the RE0F10D as it has a roller bearing instead of ball bearings on the pulley shafts The RE0F10A in the fourth gen had ball bearings which were found to fail occasionally.

Ok I have a 2014. Just replaced the transmission at 165,000, but it's like I'm having the same issue of not being able to go pass 80. Intake was replaced, throttle body was replaced. No surges in rpms and no slippage as far as I know. Could it be something not communicating

Ok, I hope this list doesnt' become a long list, but just trying to get an idea of how many people with 5th gens have already had to have their CVTs replaced.

If you have issues, Also I want you to contact Nissan Consumer Affairs if the dealer refuses to put you into a car for the time being and also tell them what dealer you are involved with and what issue you are having with your 2013 Altima.

Please list when you purchased the car, apprx milage when trans stopped working, the year of production, motor size, and any other details you may think is important.

I'll keep the list updated as people post.

Add me to the list of "victims" from a failed transmission in February 2022.
2014 Altima Sedan 2.5L SL with 100,800 miles.
Original owner here, bought it brand new in November of 2013.

Transmission trouble started last Thursday at 99,950 miles, 3 hours into an extended weekend trip. There were no warning indicators on the dash. The car ran fine between 60 and 70 mph. The tachometer wandered worst at slow speeds with gentile bucking and sluggish below 25mph. We got home Sunday night after driving 1000 more miles with the transmission becoming worse but still drivable. It was then taking longer to get into gear from park.

My wife and I are both seniors who drive conservatively. Our Altima 2.5 SL was a cream puff in like-new condition but with a bad transmission. We wanted to get this issue resolved because we want to keep this car for many more years.

I arranged a visit to the dealer where we bought our Altima from when the car was new. The service department called us a few hours after dropping off the car. The transmission needed replacing. $5300 and two days later, our Altima is back home and back to normal with a rebuilt transmission. The service department claims Nissan did the rebuild with new and improved parts so that the problem won't happen again. We shall see.

Here is our Altima just prior to the road trip we took last week.

I bought a 2016 2.5 with zero miles in March 2017. First transmission failed at 32k. 100% covered. Second transmission failed at 111,000. Nissan covered 60% of the dealer cost (I paid $1600).

Car just started slipping when accelerating from a stop. Engine over revs. Back off the gas and be gentle and all is good. Pretty sure I’m on my last 10k with this crap unit.

This just happened after replacing all brakes, rotors and tires and scheduling a cat converter for next month.

Not sure it will be worth putting a fourth transmission in the Car.

Love to hear advice. (I just replaced headlight assemblies also)
