I'm going to look at a car I found in the ad. It says it's 1997. What can I look for to distinguish it from a 1997.5?

many 97.5s came with a limited edition badge on the side, though mine didnt. if u get under the car the 97.5s have their cat up at the downpipe instead of back where they are on 93-97s. other than that, look at the title or sticker if they still have it.
half a year......DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

actually i do believe that the 97.5s mechincal layouts are more simmilar to 2nd gens...
my 97.5 uses an oil filter for a 98. 1st time i went to go do the oil change, the filter for a 97 wouldn't fit. So i tried the 98, and sure enough, that was the one.

They all have the same engine from 93-01, but from 97-98 the layout is just the slightest bit different than the earlier models.

I think the egr valve is slightly different.
There is no external coil for the ignition.
the cat is positioned a little different, like aaron said
etc
Like 1fastaltima said, the distributor cap has no coil wire. That's a pretty easy thing to spot.
No coil will also make it more difficult to upgrade your ignition.
does anyone know if the ecu on a 97.5 is the same as the other 1st gens or r they the ones in the 2nd gen?

another way u can tell if its a 97 or a 97.5 is that there r sum limitededition colors like my color...black cherry...i'm pretty sure dat color is only available on 97.5
consumerguide.com says the 97.5 was the first with side impact beams.

i think you may be right about that, mine's black cherry, also a 97.5

hmmmmm, that's weird
thanx for all the replies people. you guys are great. we ended up not getting either of the 1997 (both 97's, as evident by the cat). both were kinda crappy, like the previous owner didn't care. neglected altimas...a sad sight...

you sir, have a 97.5
Okay I have a 97.5. what are the draw backs gonna be? what mods wont fit right? and are there any other parts different from the regular first gens??
probably nothing, I haven't had any probs yet. But then again, i have yet to start the engine or exhaust.
I know I'm late but....

Check the sensor on the air filter, it's different from the 93-96 models. You'll see what I'm talking about.

the greddy exhaust wwill need to add about a foot of pipe, like installing it on a 2nd gen
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
For those of you who read my post about the '97 SE I found, I went to see it today and it turns out the damn thing isn't an SE. It's a 1997.5 Limited Edition. Oh man, how I was pissed off... :angry1:

Anyway, if I were to check market value on one of those things using, say, Edmunds.com, would it be considered a GXE? Edmunds.com doesn't list the 1997.5 Limited Edition as its own trim level, so is the GXE the closest thing? I also noticed, though, that 'Limited Edition' isn't listed as an options package or anything for the 1997.5 GXE.

Hmm...?
