Am I the only one who despises them. They are such American diseases (I even hesitate to call them diseases because they can't be, all diseases have some cure yet doctors say there is no cure, which basically means that these diseases aren't diseases but stupidity, IMO.)

So many people in so many countries suffer from starvation and only in America can someone say they refuse to eat, or they don't want that food in them because it'll make them fat.

Society ruins these people, but is it because they are weak and manipulatable? I'm unsure about a lot of it.

I just found out that someone somewhat close to me has one so I am concerned/pissed off.

Discuss.

Saw the special on gymnists last night, how some of them have eating disorders. It's a social pressure, and it's all about environment. If they are not brought up with a strong sense of self-worth, I would think they are susceptible to doing whatever it takes to "fix" themselves.

I don't despise them, they don't choose to have poor self-esteem.

Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to hear about your friend. not much you can really do except be supportive. A very close friend of mine is bulemic. Thing is (like many), she has no reason to be, she's in extremely good shape and is gorgeous. It all boils down to psychological in her case. She views herself as unattractive and extremely overweight. Problems like these are curable but it takes a long time to recover from. She's gotten alot better but will have relapses now and then. Just try to be there for your friend and do your best to keep their spirits and views of themself up.

Actually, it usually happens to intelligent, over achievers. One of my best friends had both types. Be supportive. You may not understand it, and you may not like it. But then, neither do they.
