Dear Nissanclub members,

I am in deep trouble - or so I think.

I noticed that my gas tank is leaking since atleast the last week. I noticed a sharp drop in my gas mileage between the last two refills. Today I found a small puddle underneath the rear of the car on the passenger side. I could see that the underside of the tank is moist too. So basically, I have a fuel leak.

I am in a critical stage of my PhD and currently writing my thesis which I have to finish in two weaks. So basically I cant spend anytime doing any repairs.

Is there a quick fix OR can I drive with the problem. I want to know how dangerous it is. Also, how much will it cost me to fix it.

I appreciate if someone could make some suggestions.

thank you.

as long as u can afford the gas, don't sweat it and finish your thesis. pay full attention to school and dont let a car bog your thoughts.

Oh yeah ... I can afford the gas. I dont have to drive to go to school so its not that big a problem. I am only concerned that my car will catch fire when I drive like a few miles close to home.

Thanks bxrs92. I appreciate your thought.

you should be pretty safe, permatex does make a gas tank sealer stuff...you can try it but i never have and im not sure it would get along with your fuel pump...

EDIT: if u let ur tank go to almost empty - try to find the leak and put some JB weld on the outside of it....

empty it out by running it to death, or siphon the tank out through the fuel line...

then get some JB weld and replace on the hole/seal leak...it wont take long at all..

A couple years ago my car developed a gas leak (but this was from a hose under the hood). I too noticed a drop in mileage and also fuel smell.

I recall using the car for over a couple months before I had it fixed...no problem other than low mileage. but i did not have gas puddles form under the car. matter of fact, i couldn't see any fuel (very slow drip) which is why i couldn't figure out that i had a leak...It took a oil change to discover the problem.

this is such an old forum, I hope someone will still read it. I notice an intermittent gas smell, and when I put some gas in the other day, there was a puddle of gas under the filler inside the wheel. I am surprised I even noticed it because it evaporated within minutes, and I would not have known. I am more afraid of taking the car to an unknown mechanic because he may find a million things wrong. 98...I only drive 5 km a day and want to know if it is dangerous. Any help appreciated thanks

If you are lucky enough to have a plastic tank, it is most likely it's the filler pipe $130 or connecting hose/clamp $40 that has failed...you can still get these.
