Grinding sounds when accelerating

I have a 2010 Nissan Altima 2.5L 4 cylinder, and it makes almost a grinding noise when it accelerates. I hope it's not anything with the engine. I only hear the grinding noise when I'm outside of the vehicle watching one of my friends drive it away. The exhaust system is really rusty but I don't know if that's it...any ideas?
