I plan on getting a JL audio 500/1 and one JLaudio 10W7. I plan on building the box myself. I am not sure wether to go with the ported box or just a sealed box. I enjoy projects like this and plan on taking my time with the box since i am throwing down some cash for the sub and amp I want to make sure I get the most out of my sub. Also what is the best location to aim this sub, i am assuming aimed at the trunk but you never know with these subs?

that 500 is NOWHERE near enough for that sub. if you're going o get an amp, put at LEAST 1000 watts to that W7. if you're only going to push 500, dont get a W7. and go ported. the sub will love you.

bleh, i checked their power ratings on their site. the 10" is a waste of money. either get the 12 or 13" W7, or get something a lot cheaper that sounds just as good. no point in spending $750 on a sub if it cant even handle 500 watts safely.

for that price, go with a RE SX or even an XXX. the xxx will sound almost identical to the W7, and get louder. and its only like $350 for a 12 i think. the SX is like $249 for a 12, but doesnt sound as good as an xxx would i have heard.

I was pretty set on the W7 but now I am not sure
I found the W7 for about 350 and i plan on getting the JL 500/1 for a little under $400
I have never heard of the other subs you have mentioned but I will look into it. I have only used JL in the past. I recently got a new car and started all over I have a 4 chanel Xtant amp for my Alpine components up front and a kennwood excelon head unite which i plan on replacing. So my next step is another amp and subs.
Can someone give me a link for xxx subs i tried doing a search on yahoo but i got mostly porn sites?

the Koda is an AWESOME SQ sub, probably better (IMO) than the XXX/Brahma/W7. 300w RMS, so its not massively loud, but it's supposed to sound perfect. why are you set on the W7? and why the 500/1?

That is what I am hoping. I sold my ed e12a, looking forward to trying a pair of koda's. Based on your post it looks like you have heard a koda, was it sealed or ported?

personally, i never heard a Koda, but they're supposed to own. The subs you listed ARE the best SQL...thre Koda is SQ only.

Usually for amps I only go for Xtant but unless i go for the 1001dx the others put out full power at 2ohm so the W7 being 3ohm will not put the xtant to full use. That is why I went with the JL 500/1.
I guess those are the two brands me and my buddies from high school were into now i am in college and really do not have time to research other brands. I only tend to follow those two, I currently have a 4ch Xtant for my interior speakers in my 02 altima and would not get anything but Xtant for interiors.
At first back in the day I me and my buddies went through tons of equipment we were all big into car audio. Starting with Rockford amps, Alpine amps, and others. my one friend had a 1505alpine amp 900W hooked up to 4 JL audio 10 inch wo's subs in a hatchback. i think at the time he paid around $700 for amp.
Then my other friend of course had to top that so he got 3 jlaudio 12 W6's with a Xtant 1001dx I think he paid around 900 for the amp.
So one day we were just messing around and we hooked up the Xtant to the 4 10W0's Now the Xtant is rated at 1000W only 100 more then the alpine.
Well let me tell you it sounded ten times better it was a lot louder cleaner and the subs were a quicker in responding it sounded amazing.
The xtant was not even at full potential it had the gain on low and did not have the bass boost chip in either. And unlike the Alpine amp that after 5 min of playing you could burn yourself on if you touch it the xtant stayed cool! I guess that is what got me hooked on xtant amps.
Like i said I have never heard of any of those subs mentioned above, I have been into car audio off and on now for about 6 yrs. I am not saying they are bad it is just I have never seen never mind heard any of them. I am not saying JL is #1 but I have had many different jl subs, so i know that they are a good sub, I feel secure in buying something from a company I know of rather then dropping a couple hundred bucks on another sub I have never seen besides a pic on internet or heard.

Well let me educate some of you. The 500/1 will be the best way to go without sending too much wattage to the 10 inch W7. The JL rep told me himself. And as far as it not being worth the money, you have to be kidding me. These pound harder than most 12's I have heard, i think its very much worth the money and all the weight too!

oh christ, you;ve got a cap in there, now stfu. the amp is a complete waste of money, when better amps can be had for a good bit less. shit, i got my amp (2000+w RMS) for $330 shipped. now, tell me, how is paying almost as many dollars as watts an amp puts out a good thing?

now, just because a sales rep says something doesnt mean shit. of COURSE they're going to tell you it works the best with that amp, because they make money by telling you that!

and yes, if you're compaing SPL output, the W7 is a waste of money. as far as comparing SQ, there are better SQ subs out there. the W7 is a good SQL sub, but certainly not the best out there.

and W7's arent meant to "pound hard". they're meant to be used in upper end SQL installs, where "punch" is MUCH less important than transparent bass. thank you sir, and have a good day.

That's a nice little setup. BUT, I personally don't believe JL is worth their retail price. On the other hand, if I came across some JL cheap then I would definitely jump on them. ;)

I do know that 500 watts is enough for a 10W7. Yeah, of course, a 10W7 can handle of 1000 watts. However, it really depends on what he is looking for in terms of SQ and SPL. Not to mention, it really depends on how he listens to his music. For example, is he one he tends to play his music at full blast and "has" to tweak the settings **** near full tilt? ;) That would determine how long the sub will last.

The funny thing is that a friend of mine had a 12W7 with my old RF Bd1000.1 amp and his output was great. However, it was no where near my output of this setup I am running now. Hard to believe that these little 8's sound so **** great and can get LOW. ;)

Bottom line, if a person wants to "waste" money on JL then that's entirely a personal choice. JL is a great company with great products. It's just that they have a high retail price because of their marketing. Hence, that is why you can buy some RE subs directly from them for dirt cheap. ;) RE doesn't have too many advertisements. :)
